ADVICE : Bondo

Hi guys i want to take my pep to the next level watched many youtube videos, threads on here and people use bondo or smoth-on. Im in the UK and these arnt that readily available, so can i use this.

Also am i getting this right, after pepping harden the outside with resin (im using 2part epoxy resin). Then harden the inside with fibreglass mat (how many layers? which oz?). Then use the P38 above to do the sculpt? then paint.

They will probably would, however, you can get Bondo itself on Amazon, but shipping might make it cost prohibitive.Just remember to make thin layers as the weight becomes an issue the more resin and bondo you use.

With regards to the fibreglassing... I used a single layer of 320g fibre matting on the inside of my Iron Man helmet, which was sufficient. You'll be able to feel if the pep needs another layer, apply some pressure to the surface area and if there is some flexibility, then apply another layer.

You would probably want to keep the layers to a minimum as fibreglass does make the pep heavier layer for layer.

Also, I use Smooth On EpoxAmite for my resin. I have personally found that it needs less resin than the standard fiberglass resin for a much harder piece. Most of my Lich King Helmet that I made actually didn't need any fiberglass to help provide support. I added just a little on the lower front of the helm simply because they only had a single attachment point. I contrasted this to my Iron Man suit that I started last year, same amount of Resin, to include a fiberglass rondo slush coat for the foot and forearm, and it feels like a light hit will punch a hole in it. The Helm, not so much. In fact, its almost deadly with how hard it is.

Yes, the EpoxAmite is more upfront for the Gallon size but I used far less than fiber glass resin, so long term it will work better, at least in my option.

Then put the Bondo over the top of that. You just have to make sure you are not putting too much hardener in it. I cut my bondo applicator into 51 mm (2 inch) strips and found that a single scoop of bondo needs a small pea sized bit of hardener, otherwise you have about 2 minutes to apply before it gets too hard. Use Something like this container to mix both your resin and bondo in. Then it just pops right out when it is hard.

Anyway, I am sure you know all of this, it is just things I've noted in my latest build.

Yes dude that stuff (isopon p38) is the same as bondo its only the brand name that's different. If your going to halfords though my tip would be to go for the other brand they do "U-pol" you get alot more for your money and I find that it spreads a little smoother also. Make sure you get the easy sand variety though.

Hi guys thanks for all the answers, in regards to the fibreglass, what happens if you cant get into places (ie the batman ears on the cowl) could i use fibreglass paste?

We use U-Pol Smooth 7 at work for our modelmaking.
I'd check the difference in price as I've seen it advertised at between £22.00 and £57.00 for the same size tin.
When you get to the difficult areas less is more! Apply small amounts at a time and sand as you go - nothing worse than trying to sand large blobs of filler!
Also, before filler sets fully its reaches a 'waxy' stage and this is the time when you can carve it easily with a knife or chisel.

Thin layer of fibreglass matt on the inside, just try and cover it with 1 layer to start Mat is very thick and strong!

Tight places can be done with a resin/body filler mix 50/50 (commonly referred to as 'rondo') OR wit fibreglass TISSUE (its just really thin woven fibreglass) none of that crazy stringyness.

A big tub of this goes a very long way and it's pretty damn cheap I use it, sands easy and uses the same hardener as resin (which is great for making the slushy rondo business)

Thanks guys i think i will go for the u-pol 7 as i can get 3.5ltr for £20 but as said some want 60 for the same thing. Thanks for the rondo advice but, if i pour rondo into a bat cowl it will fill the ears? is this ok
