11-23-06 UPDATE

After receiving a 90% email reply rate the overwhelming decision is 14 rods.

Personally I would take aesthetics over accuracy anyway so I'm glad we decided on 14 :)

Now we need to determine the diameter of the galaxy sphere.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Imperial Knight and Spheric Thor were kind enough to send me some screen caps and as you can see the real prop is slightly different from the item the jeweler offered

Here is a picture of the Stunt Prop

RealStuntProp1.jpg

RealStuntProp2.jpg

And here's the Hero

RealHeroProp.jpg

As you can see these 2 props have slight differences so now we need to decide on which attributes we want to incorporate into our version

Personally I think a cleaned up version of the Stunt will look great but ultimately the decision will be made by the group.

I also concur with Spheric Thor about the rods, you can clearly see they do not line up perfectly with the Upper Cage cross members and to me it looks like the 15 rod configuration is the closest match.

11-16-06 UPDATE

If anyone has the ability to get some screen caps of the real prop I would REALLY appreciate it if you posted them below.

Thanks

It looks like there is enough preliminary interest to merit discussion of this prop and the creation of an email group.

So if your interested in this project please send an email to bobadebt@ec.rr.com

Please put "Galaxy" in the subject line and the following info in the body

Forum ID

Real Name
Address
Telephone Number

Special talents that might pertain to this project

Now onto the discussion

It will be very important that we all use the same verbage when we refer to the different parts of this prop

I created this Parts Breakdown and I hope it is easy enough to understand

Parts%20Breakdown.jpg

CHAIN - Of the shelf item that may have to be made to a custom length

LANYARD - This appears to be an off the shelf item. It will be attached to the upper cage via a small threaded fastener

UPPER CAGE - This assembly will consist of 3 machined parts that will be silver soldered together. A small threaded fastener will go though the underside and of the UPPER CAGE to attach it to the LANYARD. This part will be the UPPER ASSEMBLY and will loosely fit into the CENTER RING, During final assembly the UPPER ASSEMBLY will be glued to the LOWER ASSEMBLY after both parts have been silver plated.

CENTER RING - This assembly will consist of 1 machined part

LOWER CAGE - This part will consist of 14 - 16 bent rods that will be silver soldered to the lower part of the CENTER RING and the upper part of the FINIAL

BOTTOM FINIAL - This assembly will consist of 3 machined parts and 14 - 16 bent rods that will be silver soldered to the lower part of the FINIAL.

GALAXY This could be anything but to me it looks like a Rose Quartz Marble, which can be easily bought in just about any size.

I live down the street from a glass bead maker. I dont know if she can do it but I can ask. In any case im in

Whatever help you guys need just let me know. I've still got the drawings I did and I've also got access to a great machine shop. As it just so happens I do have ten glass marbles that are just about perfect- they're about 13/16" diameter. I'll take a look for silver chains in our catalogs work- I can get them for a deal. Does anyone have good reference pics of the screen used chain? This is the only pic I have.

I'd so love to be in on this but it looks to be too pricey for me. :unsure

Is this the real Galaxy?

If so can I use this picture?

As far as I recall, that is the Galaxy Holder that is made by the jeweler that made them for the film based on the original concept art. The Galaxy that was inside the holder in the film was CG.

I have no idea who actually owns the rights to the Galaxy Holder design, but that jeweler does (or at least did) sell them at one point- that photo was on their website. Unfortunately I can't find the website anymore.

I did take another look at my drawings and it looks like the marble for the Galaxy should ideally be around 11/16" to 3/4" diameter. I think 13/16" might be just a bit too big- the Galaxy in the one I made is about 5/8" diameter and while it looks right for my cats (which range from abbout 8lbs. to 15lbs.) it definitely appears a bit small to me.

In, In, In, In,.....................

FYI... Not that it matters,... But I have seen some pretty cool Marbles that might work...???

I'll look around..

The marble can be made by printing a photo of a real galaxy on a transparent plastic sheet like they use for over head projectors. They are sold at staples.
Then make a mold of the marble, fill it half way with clear resin and let is cure in a pressure pot. Then put the printed photo of the galaxy in the mold and top it off with resin.
The galaxy will look like its suspended in the center and if its pressure cast it will be bubble free.
I do this method with other props and it works great.

Ok, I have been looking at this thing all day and I KNOW it can be made from machined parts that have been silver plated and I have devised a way to make it very easy to assemble.

I have to take care of some thing but i will get some basic work done on the concept and try to get it posted tonight.

As far as pricey, I don't think this will be that expensive and the process will be spread out so you'll be able to buy and make the parts as the project progresses.

I have edited the First post which will be contain all new and updated info

Now we need to discuss the LOWER CAGE

It will be very important to determine the correct number of rods that make up the LOWER CAGE.

To me it looks like there are 15 but with 15 rods only one will align to the UPPER CAGE cross members

14 rods will align to 2 of the cross members and 16 will align to all 4 of the cross members

Please discuss

I believe there are 16 so they line up with the upper cage. That's how I made mine.

I think that's a great idea for placing the Galaxy in the marble.

Lots of views but very little discussion.

I know a lot of you would like to get one of these but are afraid of what it will cost.

All I can say it that it shouldn't be too expensive, even if each part cost $25 and the rod stock costs $10 the total price wouldn't be that bad at all.

I think this will be a great project that will give many of you the opportunity to learn some new and easy skills such as silver soldering and bending rod stock.

I will create full tutorials and offer lots of tech support via the phone, email and this forum.

And if you positively think you can't assemble it, I will offer build up services on a limited basis.
