ACME Disintegrating Pistol

So I just signed up for the RPF thinking that making posts about projects will give me extra incentive to actually make progress on things as I'm having a rough patch and tend to get in the middle of stuff and then drop it for long periods of time. I'm hoping I'm posting this in the right place.
This is probably my farthest along project at the moment, the ACME Disintegrating Pistol from the Loony Tunes short "Duck Dodgers in the 24 1⁄2th century"

So I started with a screen cap and modeled the whole thing out as best I could trying to make it as accurate as possible

I wound up botching the 3D model in such a way that I couldn't separate out the individual components for 3D printing by themselves, but for a one piece print it cam out pretty nicely.

Then came sanding and filler and more sanding and more filler. The plan was to make a mold and then cast a few out so I wanted it to be perfect.

It was just about done when one day my brother moved the bag I kept it in to someplace it ought not have been so it wound up getting stepped on / crushed and all kinds of screwed up.
So that's where it stands now. I've finally got the means to print off another one so I'm going to go in to the maker-space I frequent to do that today. I'm going to try a few things on the model to see if I can get the pieces separated out to do multiple prints. hopefully that helps because some of the bits were an absolute nightmare to sand while maintaining a uniform shape. This is my first project like this so I'm pretty inexperienced, but I think I have a pretty solid grasp of all this stuff.

ahhh Acme Products, the bane of many Loony Tunes Characters. this looks great. are you going to paint it as it looks in the cartoon or more realistic colours?

I'm going to do most in the cartoon style, but I might do one or two a bit more realistic or something. I know a guy that wants an unfinished one for a "generic" 50's Sci-Fi costume so I'm curious as to how that one will come out.

I got the files prepped and set to print over night, I'll go pick them up tomorrow (it's not today until the sun comes up) and post some photos of the new pieces.

HA! I've thought of ways of tackling this myself but I'm glad someone else beat me to the punch. I had plans on making mine actually dissolve.:p

alright, so I picked up the prints yesterday. All the small bits came out pretty well, but I think there was some kind of issue with the machine I used for the bigger pieces as they came out kind of wonky. I'm debating on if I should try again with the big bits or just eat it and start with the filler work. most of the issues will probably go unnoticed by people, but I'll know...

Maybe I'm just being anal about it, but in any case I really should sleep more. I keep making small dumb mistakes and I want this to be as clean as possible.

Man I did that thing where I completely neglected to post progress and just disappeared into the aether.
Time to fix all that. Lots of sanding and filling went in to make the whole thing silky smooth. The trigger guard wound up being an issue and in the end I replaced it with some laser cut and hand shaped MDF. As far as paint goes the only air brush I have is meant for cars so the whole paint job was done with Krylon spray paint, Sun yellow and Watermelon gloss specifically. I laser cut a stencil for the lettering, hit it with a flat black and then used a satin clear over the whole thing to keep things nice and cartoony. Unfortunately during all of this my phone was stolen so I have very few WIP shots of it left. I'm pretty happy with how things turned out over all and as the makerspace I work for had a table I got to debut it alongside my freshly completed Harley Quinn cork gun at the 2017 LA ComicCon. Sadly I needed some emergency dental work earlier this year so I sold it at a local art show to deal with that, but I'm getting ready to make an improved one that will hopefully be ready for the SoCal RPF party.

Nice job! I think most of here can relate to starting a project that ends up taking longer to finish than we expected. I know I definitely do that. Thanks for the update!

Haha.. I'm going on year 4 with my boba Fett now so we understand how things get put off for some time and picked back up when we catch the bus for it ;). This looks great! Has me wanting to start mine up again ;)
