Accelerating the rusting proccess??

Hi guys, im looking for a way to speed up the rusting proccess for a sculpt I want to do.

The piece will be sheet metal and welded seems. I want the piece to have an all over rusted finish, which will then be clear coated.

Any ideas on this? Spray down with salt water perhaps?

Thanks

How big is the sculpt?

For a college art project I did that was about 6' tall in steel, I mixed about a cup of vinegar with a few tablespoons of salt until all the salt was dissolved and then added a cup of chlorine and sprayed enough of the mixture on to wet the surface with a spray bottle. I had to repeat the application a few times. The sculpture rusted pretty quickly.

To rust one of Chen's steel grenade bodies for an Obi ANH lightsaber, I submerged it into a cup of salt water that I left in the sun for days and that was pretty fast for the effect.

I did find this, though, if you want to rust something extremely fast with no chlorine:

The suggestions above are good, the only thing I will add is scrub it down real well with Dawn dish soap, rinse well, and then give it a white down with rubbing alcohol prior to the bleach, salt, water treatment... The washing steps will simply make sure the surface is clean of any oils and contaminants, thus allow for a more even rusting...

Awsome post mate and much appreciated. The piece is a large stand upon which our HIC rests against. I want it to look like its been in the tunisian dessert for years.

Will update this as I go and show the progress.

This company has a line of paints with metal in them and chemical solutions to patina and rust them. their rust solution is very good and quick.

Metal Effects makes a paint that simulates iron. It is water based. They also have a chemical to spray on to rust it. Then they have a patina sealer to apply. I used the patina and sealer on a plasma cut steel viking boat pot rack and it worked beautifully.
