A New Hope - trooper padding

I'd never noticed this before until I saw a similar still of this sequence (Luke/Leia's Leap). This stunt trooper has a heavily padded shoulder bell - he's prepared for taking quite a knock when he drops to the floor.

There's always something new to see - no matter how many years have passed.

Odd that it is only on one shoulder. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the stunt of the one trooper falling off the ledge after being shot?
