2001: A Space Odyssey... Am I the only one that...

It probably helps knowing beforehand that you're about to watch a slow movie. Likewise with Solaris, if I saw that without the knowledge that it's very very long and almost art house, i would have been frustrated. But i knew what i was in for, and took my time on a sunday afternoon, and loved every second of it.

First time i saw the Godfather, I was about 15, and i don't know what i expected, but i found it torturously long. i've still not quite been able to shake that feeling despite having watched it again a couple of times through.

Saw it on TV a couple of months ago and it didn't particularly strike me as as slow. The only part I really skipped was the whole space travel bit.

Also watched 2010 and it wasn't as bad as I remembered. That film clashed stylistically with 2001, but seen on its own it's kinda ok.

I do find that thanks to Sci-Fi in general, there isn't much mystery left. We've all seen it in some incarnation or another so the whole thing about abstract aliens isn't as mindblowing as it might have been in 1968.

Barry Lyndon is one of my favourite films.

Barry Lyndon IS a good movie. It's one of my favorite examples of movie lighting since everything was shot with natural lights instead of those massive lighting set ups. I took a three month course in movie lighting and it's just bizarre.
