Well, I finally decided to start this project. I grabbed myself a Malibu Ken and some Sculpey and set to work!

I'm posting this in hopes of getting opinions and advice as I progress. This is only the first few hours worth of work and I will post progress pictures as I... well, progress.

Here's where I'm at:

First question: The Sculpey eyeball is just a placeholder. I'll probably use a glass bead of some sort unless someone knows where I can get a scaled eyeball for a 12" figure. I'd like it to look real and not cartoony, so any advice would be apreciated.

I was planning on giving him a haircut and fixing the front part sticking up. I've always preferred rooted hair to sculpted, so hopefully I can manage that.

I scraped off Ken's other eye and am hoping to repaint it to look like Aaron. Maybe some sculpting on that side will be in order. Not sure.

I also plan on getting a Ken suit, shirt and tie and getting a burned effect on the cloth. Any tips? I'm afraid of actually taking a flame to it, but I think I might have to along with some airbrushing.

Like I said I'd love some feedback, advice and opinions as I make progress. What better place to get help then from the cornucopia of talent here on the RPF where I respect all of the artisians and truly value any help I could get.

Thanks everyone!

you do know........that doll will melt when you bake the sculpey?

Ha, ha, ha , ah... um... really?

No, I'm kidding. I'm actually thinking of boiling just the head and maybe peel away the obviously now distorted flesh side and put the hardened Sculpey into a freshly cut new Ken head.

Or something like that. Or get rid of the hair and cast a mold. Probably easier that way.

You know, I live in Redding and its freaking hot here, everyday. Anyways I forgot a small blob of Super Sculpy in my car, and the next day it was as hard as a rock. I guess just being in a temperature that hot just cooked it. Just an idea...

Off to a good start. :) Have you considered using a Dragon soldier head for the unscarred side? Way better sculpting than on a Ken. Then again, they don't have rooted hair.

I had thought about different heads... as well as just sculpting the whole thing as well, but I like the two textures next to each other. And yeah, no rooted hair on the dragons.

If I end up casting it I could try rooting my own hair. Problem is, it would be MUCH easier to do a solid cast then hollow.:unsure

Lookin good, Kurt! One thing that I think would make a big difference right away would be using a smaller diameter eyeball on his scarred side.

The clothes could be weathered effectively with real wear and acrylic paints, I'd think! Even the cracking of the paint would look good after it dried.

The doll should survive boiling just fine, but yeah, if you want to make multiples you'll probably have a much easier time of sculpted hair...

Keep taking progress pics! See you when you get in to work...

Wonder what it would look like if you just soldered the hell out of his face. Kinda makes me want to try it. But then again, that wouldn't give any detail. Just the pleasure of melting a barbie dolls face. Anyways, looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

and his eye does look quite big, thats the first thing I noticed.

First off, awesome sculpting job!

Secondly, my first thought on seeing this pic was "Two-Face meets There's Something About Mary". :p

Hahahahaha!!!! Awesome! That never crossed my mind the whole ime I was working on him!

There's a new potential line of figures... unrelated hybrids!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm trying to get better.

I found several places that offer glass eyes on wires for 12" scale dolls, so the eyeball thing should be worked out. It seems that 6mm is the right size (which mine is obviously bigger than).

First, VERY cool.

Second, I wouldn't try grafting it onto another figure head. You sculpted it to fit this particular head. Other figure's heads are going to be be dimensionally different. You may end up having to try and fill gaps or reshape it completely. At most, I'd consider swapping this head onto a dragon body.

Third, you can get plastic BB's in 6mm and white. A bag of 500 might run you $5.

Thanks for that heads up. I'm gonna spend a few extra bucks and get the glass blown eyes because the iris paint jobs are incredible. I don't know that I could do such a great job. Hoping to up the value with the "realistic" eye as well.:)

I've also been thinking about just boiling the head to0 harden the Sculpey, removing the Ken head and just finish sculpting the unscarred side. I'm not sure why I am trying to work around Ken's head outside of wanting the rooted hair.
