1/12 Bandai Sandtrooper vs 6" Black Series Sandtrooper (WIP)

I'm in the process of fixing and repainting/reworking a Black Series Dewback to make it passable as a movie replica. The Dewback came with a 6" Sandtrooper as seen below.

It's certainly not bad. But compared to the Bandai kit, the finer details are very noticeable.

The overall heights are similar and both will be used in the display I'm working on. I am in the process of repainting the Black Series along with building out the Bandai kit. Here's where I'm at now:

As you can see, the Bandai kit has sharper details and, due to the construction process, more variance in those finer details. The thing that is most off-putting with the Black Series figures is the soft plastic/vinyl that they are made from. I'll have more progress tonight and this weekend as I'm working on Boba Fett, too.

I take it that in the last picture the Bandai was the one on top.

Both look good but one thing I do not care for the 6" Black Series figure is the framing around the helmet lenses makes them look like goggles

You are correct... Probably should have mentioned the top one is Bandai! I agree, though, the Black Series does look like goggles. There are other minor things that throw it off, too. I'll point those out once I get to the body of each.

Nice to see that comparison!

I did not realize how superior the Bandai kits were, but there is sure a noticeable difference!

Made some decent progress this weekend to include a Speeder bike trooper, unpainted. I wanted to show the difference between an out of box build and a painted Bandai kit. You'll also see a comparison of the Black Series vs Bandai Stormtroopers. They are painted but not done yet.

Oh... And Vader wanted to oversee... Lol...

Here's a quick comparison of the Black Series (top) and bandai (bottom) rifles for the Sandtrooper. Once again, Bandai has obviously higher detail. The black series is just... Softer...

And here's three of the four weapons that come with the Bandai kit.

I love the figure kits. I have Phasma, a FO trooper, Biker scout, R2 and 3PO, and the Fettman. I painted my FO trooper, speederbike, and R2 as I was filling his dome seam. The rest I I used clears, washes and for Fett a tiny brush and paint to do the damage. I was going to do the whole layerd paint as I did on my slave one, but I was woried that at this scale I would mess him up. While my FO trooper came out great, it was a lot of work to paint white white again and there is a tiny spot that will always bug me, so I wish I had just gloss coated his white bits.
I can't wait to see what you do with these guys!

Thanks, Fett_Ish! I'm going to be just clear coating the Biker Scout and weathering, as well. I really wanted to see the difference in painting and just clear coating. The Sandtrooper's will be 'dirtier' anyway, so these guys are great for this type of comparison.

Layered painting definitely takes more time and patience, but the end result is worth it. I'll have a separate post for the Speederbike and Biker Scout.

I'm kind of torn between attempting to paint the Biker Scout or leaving it bare plastic and just weathering

I do have to say that the Black Series Sandtrooper does not want to stand on his own very well. That's why his pack is sitting in from of him. When I pose him in the diorama I'm doing for them, it'll be off since he'll be handling the dewback.

I still need the Deathtrooper, Shadowtrooper, and the regular Stormtrooper...ugh! And that is not taking Phasma into consideration...

I have finished my Bandai Sandtrooper... I made a custom leather sling for his rifle blaster. Now I need to finish the black series one...
