I have heard a lot of model builders rave about the stuff from Alclad. But there is a trick to applying it so it looks like chrome. Here is the link Alclad2.com
The silver rim I got from a pen. But I can't remember which one it was. I used two-part epoxy to first glue the silver rim to the gem. Then I glued that to ring. Always applying the glue to the back just in case I made a mistake and used too much epoxy.
I haven't tried this but maybe you could use Surface Mount LEDs for illumination; they are much smaller than regular LEDs and you could proabably fit them easily in the cavity between the metal and green plastic part. They are a pain to hand solder though.
Thanks but actually I can't take all the credit for the flat gem. I used the same rhinestone MrGzilla used only I flipped it; sanded off the silver sticky backing on the back then polished (wet sanded) it with some really fine sandpaper to remove the scuff marks and sprayed it with some clear...
