Third attempt at Sharkman lid, finally coming together. Magnets installed.

Got the ear pieces pep'd, resin'd, and rondo'd. I'll start shaping them as soon as the rondo is dry.

Did some more filler work, some wet sanding and sprayed some duplicolor dark cherry and sunburst gold.

Can anybody explain spot putty to me?

Re: Can anybody explain spot putty to me? I think I got it. Ok, very excited. I think I've figured out the problem. Today I bought some Duplicolor filling sandable primer, and some 400 grit wet sandpaper. The trick is to use a few coats of the filler primer, let that dry completely, then...

Can anybody explain spot putty to me?

I found some stuff at the local auto parts house called Putty Cote. It's made by 3M, and looks similar to Evercoat Everglaze. It's a two part ultra smooth filler. It's kind of expensive, at $26 a quart. But at this point, I'd pay the $26 to not have pinholes and edge lines. Anybody use...

Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 5/31 update

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Set Backs & Nose Jobs Do you know exactly what kind of "flowable putty" to get? What do you ask for? I think I need something between Evercoat Rage and Bondo Spot Putty. Thanks for posting your setbacks. Sometimes I see these perfect examples (like...

Can anybody explain spot putty to me?

Yep, after sanding with 240 I hit it with some primer. That's how I spot the areas that need the spot putty. It's when I apply the spot putty that things go bad. Maybe my putty is just old and dried out, and it won't apply correctly. It seems to dry extremely fast, and when I smooth it on I...

Can anybody explain spot putty to me?

How long do you let it dry before you sand? What grit? So far I've applied the Evercoat and then used 80 grit to get to the basic shape, then 120 grit, then 240. I'm left with a lot of pinholes and places where the Evercoat overlaps from layer to layer. If I try to sand the edges it creates...

Can anybody explain spot putty to me?

Yes, I'm sure I'm using spot putty. Does the stuff go bad? I used it last Halloween when working on my Halo helmet. I never considered that it might go bad. Maybe that's it. I can pick up a new tube tomorrow.

Can anybody explain spot putty to me?

OMFG. I'm so frustrated. I'm trying to fill in the pinholes left after sanding down the Evercoat. I have the Bondo brand spot putty. The problem is that by the time squeeze a little into the pinhole, and put the cap back on, it's started to dry and I when I spread it the putty kind of cakes...

Third attempt at Sharkman lid, finally coming together. Magnets installed.

It still has a very long way to go, but I couldn't resist putting a quick coat of paint on it. It helps find all the spots that need re-work, too.

Cut the lines tonight. Just drew them on with a pencil, and used a razor knife to make a 'v' cut.

Third attempt at Sharkman lid, finally coming together. Magnets installed.

Switched to Evercoat Rage, and really like it. It sands down much smoother than Bondo Gold. I know some people say "they're all the same", but I'd have to disagree. Still lots of work to do, but I'm happy with what I've been able to accomplish so far. Every time I apply the filler I get a...

Third attempt at Sharkman lid, finally coming together. Magnets installed.

Re: Third attempt at Sharkman lid, finally coming together. Got some shaping done on the back, the round contour is starting to look nice. I'm starting to fill in the sides a bit. There was some warping during the resin phase, and the sides were a bit concave. I'll have to cut the detail...

What was the hardest part of your iron man build??

The helmet is the most recongized part of the suit. We, as humans, are very perceptive when it comes to facial recognition. We can easily detect subtle deviations in shape and symmetry. I think that's why it's so hard to get a helmet you're happy with. The curves on the faceplate, the...

Third attempt at Sharkman lid, finally coming together. Magnets installed.

Re: Third attempt at Sharkman lid, finally coming together. Thanks! My dad owned a body shop, and he showed me that you can shape the bondo while it's drying. When it gets applied, there are always streaks and creases. As it dries, I use a popsicle stick to scrape off the excess, kind of...
