Wow, over a year since I started and still not done... I keep taking it apart and adding more bits. Here's the latest mod- I sanded down the airsoft grips into something much closer to the correct shape. The plastic is pretty thick and I was able to take most all the squareness out:

Hello I have not progressed much beyond that point yet, but the magazine has held up well so far. I ended up using a disposable pen housing (about perfect for the 4.5 mm BB's) I cut a slot for the spring follower and experimented with springs until I found the correct pressure. It holds 9-10...

Got the parts today and did a quick test fit to see how it goes. A lot of work to do, but it's pretty damn cool... The grill does not fit well, but the M712 is flatter in front than the C96. I will either build up the front of the magwell or figure something else out. Thanks Mark
