For the scales, I cut each out and boiled them which makes them hard as wood. I then drilled holes at the top and hand-stitched them to a leather backing. The chain maille that is attached to the bottom of the chest piece is "dragon maille"; essentially normal chain maille with a wider diameter ring overlapping it causing a scale appearance.
