FINISHED! Ckings 1/38 scale TIE FIGHTER

absolutely amazing job...

I have a question on the haze gray... I can get the color in a spray can from Tamiya, but what colors would I mix to get it from Tamiya bottles? Or, do I need to just buy the spray can and empty it into a container then use it in my airbrush? I've got a Tie Interceptor coming in and want to get the color like this.

Thanks for any help!

Thank you so much guys! A lot of time, money and efforts were invested in this project. Not just by me but also from Chris and Steve. It really means alot to hear your approval on this rather unique model.

Spam Daddy, it's a trick question. All are Ckings, right...

Korben 44, I think that a mix of sky grey, a tad german grey and a splash of blue would get you close. The cans are rather nasty to work with so I sprayed some styrene cards to keep for future reference since I have no plans to use the ultra smelly and very dusty cans again.

PixelMagic/DanielB came up with this formula

Looking at the color matches it appears pretty spot on

"To that end, I wanted to spray my color with an airbrush instead of decanting and mixing HazeGrey with white. What I did in this test below was take XF-2 Flat White and XF-82 Ocean Gray 2 (RAF) (which looks very near identical to HazeGrey, just slightly darker) and mixed them 1:1..."

Wow! Very sweet!
I love the attention to the details! I definitely like the "nods to the full-size set interior and steering yoke.
I may have missed it what color of darker grey did you use for the canopy and details?
Great job all the way 'round!

Now if only you had a X-1 DVT in 1/38th ...hmmm
..of course then you'd have to alos make another one of these for a proper escort ;)

We have a winner! Was it too obvious, Steve? =P

Chris, in your estimation what was the total cost to just "print" the model? My brother-in-law, a good friend of ours, and myself are considering going in on a 3d printer (I think it's called the Ultimaker 2?) BUT before I commit, I wondered what printing cost would be on a ship the size of the tie. I see so many different things online but not sure what's what.

To answer your question about printing the model. I was high. The parts that you see here in the finished model cost $900 in total. A large part of that cost was the main hull which was printed in Shapeways Ultra Fine Detail plastic. The wings were printed in their white, strong and flexible which is why they have a much more noticeable sandy texture to them compared to the main hull. I tried several times to get the wings printed in better quality plastic but each print came out warped and even though Shapeways tried to reprint, they couldn't get a decent quality one that could be used for the model.

Cheers,

Chris

Did they explain why they were coming out warped? Limitation of the material? Size to big? Would be good to know what can and cant be done...

I received this beautiful model from Steve recently and it is now being proudly displayed in my Detolf cabinet. The display base is a very nice finishing touch. My thanks to all who helped this project become a reality. The end result is far better than I had ever dreamed. It cost an arm and a leg to get it to this stage but every time I look at it, I have a big smile on my face and the expenditure is just secondary to the satisfaction of finally having a TIE Fighter to display with my Kotobukiya X-Wing.

really did turn out great. Very satisfying to put in all the work on this, and then get this on the other end. Steve the Swede's finishing touch on this really made it all come together!
