First look at a screen used Episode 7 R2D2 built by R2 Builder club members Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples at last nights Star Wars E7 Wrap Party in London! I got these images off Lee''s Facebook page last night around 11pm and awaited confirmation which I got early this morning!

Was it ever established how old R2 actually is? Now being in EP7 he is at least in his late 50ies!

I never like to put earth times to anything in the "galaxy far, far away" Our planet Terra (or "Earth") goes around Sol our sun in about 12 months... but mars does not.. nor do any other planets in our system so is 1 year (or one more season as Uncle Owen says) on Tatooine the same as 1 year on Earth? I like to think there is some leeway in the age of things from "a long time ago..."
Now, having said that, yes, the droids are old... and I think 30 years is a drop in the bucket considering we don't know what they are made of, who exactly made them, and just how long they are expected or designed to be in service... looks like these things can be repurposed to serve again even after being destroyed (i.e., R2 blown up by a Tie Fighter in the Death Star Trench... Threepio blasted apart on Bespin by a Stormtrooper.. Artoo again blasted at the Bunker on Endor... these droids can take a lot of abuse!

Threepio was built out of spare protocol droid parts collected by little Anakin so he is already a mish-mash of other protocol droids that were built and in service for who knows how long) the materials they are made of may last centuries...
Wookies live to be hundreds of years old.. Yoda 900... even here on earth sea turtles live and last for 100 to 150 years old. People drive cars still that are over 70 years old so why wouldn't a droid, built tough to be an astro mechanic in harsh space environments be functional and viable for more than 50 years? that's my point of view. :D

Episode 7 R2D2 in Action on HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver starting at 3:30 and 4:03

Do we know if these other people besides Oliver and Lee are involved with TFA?

not sure.. the CBI was about business and the president of Pinewood studios was there so its possible Neal Scanlan and Matt Denton were there because of their work on other films but its possible they are working on SW. neither of them have TFA listed on their IMDB page so that might mean they are not but that's not out of the ordinary to not list such a credit until the film is released... Adrianne is public relations but that could be for Lucasfilm or Pinewood in general.
