SWTOR "Exalted" (Shae Vizla) Mandalorian Helmet

Re: SWTOR Mandalorian Bounty Hunter (Shae Vizla-style) WIP

how big and what brand 3d printer do you have?

Flashforge Creator dual.

I've enclosed it with plexiglass on 3 sides and put in battery operated LED lights.

Build volume is 225mm x 145mm x 150mm / 8.9" x 5.7" x 5.9"

I have more photos and info on how the helmet was printed here:

Thanks mate! I'll give your site a good read tomorrow.
3D printing looks so promising, I really would love to give a 3d printing a try not only for pep but for some other every day things but I don't know much about it haha. Would you recommend this printer to a total 3d printer newb such as myself?

Absolutely. Flashforge is my very first 3D printer, and prior to buying it I had no previous experience with 3D printing or CAD modeling. I was ready to pull the trigger on a MakerBot replicator 2 on Amazon when I saw the Creator, which had 90+ reviews, 5/5 star rating, and was half the price of the Replicator. All these things sold me. 324 print hours later, and with very little maintenance, I have not had a single mechanical hiccup. I'm thinking of getting a second one so I can print large assemblies quicker.

Seen the prototype today... I've got a huge melon, and it fits great. Looks better in person!

Re: SWTOR Mandalorian Bounty Hunter (Shae Vizla-style) WIP

Helmet nearly finished. Just have to install lights into the ears, add some detailing to the visor, and put in my environement amplification system and it's done! The cast run of this helmet will be appearing in the Junk Yard shortly.

Re: SWTOR "Exalted" (Shae Vizla) Mandalorian Helmet WIP

Thanks guys! I'm still experimenting with various painting methods to get the disterssed look, but I'm getting the hang of it. I'm cold casting the helmet in aluminum, sanding it very fine, and then using steel wool to bring out the shine. I then use masking fluid to do some of the large "flake" spots, paint, and peel the masking fluid off to reveal the shiny metal underneath. For some of the minor scratches, I just throw the helmet on my garage floor, and drag it this way and that, then use fine sand paper to take the shine out of the main paint layer, and black paint to "oxidize" the paint in places. I finish up by adding a few extra scratches using a knife. I may touch up the paintjob a bit, as I think some of the paint chip spots are a tad too big. But for now, I'm pretty happy with how it's all turning out.

Hold on a second! This thing is made of aluminum? what was the process to get it aluminum casted and how much $$ did it set you back?

It's cast in resin, however I mixed aluminum powder with the outer layer - a process commonly referred to as cold casting. All you do then is sand the surface using fine grit paper (400+), and buff with steel wool to bring out the shine. If done right, the cast comes out looking convincingly metal.

One of the best helmets i've ever seen,

LED's in the ear cups? Genius! It looks even more bad-ass now which i thought was impossible!
