What’s better than one costume? A matching set. I had been doing Link on my own for a few years when my friend wanted to do a LoZ costume with me. We decided Dark Link was the best fit for her, and set out to replicate my costume as closely as possible, just mirrored and with a Dark Link twist.
Here's the run down on materials used:
The tunics are made out of a micro suede material. The forearm bracers are a sturdy duck cloth fabric. The “Armored” pad on my right forearm, and Dark Link’s left respectively are craft foam, reinforced with resin and plasti-dip, with leather strapping.
Gloves started life as a pair of 8 dollar yellow cow hide gloves at Wal*mart that were dyed the appropriate colors. Belts were just Tandy Leather belt blanks that were dyed. One set of the pouches I used in the past were surplus leather military pouches, and the more screen accurate pouches used are made out of plain leather.
My wig actually started life as a $15 “Surfer Dude” wig. Earrings are a pair of old screw back costume jewelry earrings that I painted blue. Ears are foam latex pieces from Scream Team.
Shields started life as one of the Zelda shields easily found on eBay. However, they shields come painted in bright, vibrant colors, so I dulled all the paint, weathered the shield up with cuts, pits and gouges, and then gave the whole thing a black and brown wash and set parts of it on fire. We then did our best to replicate the exact damage, mirrored, on Dark Link’s shield. Both swords and scabbards were mad entirely by me. Both started off with cardboard bases that were resined, then bondo’d, then resined again, before be weathered, painted, and additionally weathered.
I additionally made the bottle used by Link in the games, as well as a compasses to carry around. I also made several of the dungeon maps from the games and gave them away to people at the con who asked for pictures with me and seemed to be big fans of the game.
