Crackerjazz' 1/10 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle Ascent Stage

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Wow! This is going to be a great model.
Looks like there are a lot of things that I should learn from this build.
I'm following!!

That's what I love about crackerjazz's builds, Katsu-san: they're great fun to see happen, and I always learn something! Plus he's a great guy (or so he seems! :lol )

Seems he is a expart of engineering or specialist of architecture.
He must be a very interesting person.

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Looking GREAT, Cracker!!

Where on earth do you buy these big sheets of styrene??? I just went to Hobbycraft today, and for a pice of .015 that is 3/4 of an inch shorter and 3/4 of an inch narrower than a sheet of A4 paper, they wanted £2!!! ( $3.20 U.S.)

Hey, Bob, shall I make him some astronautsor ? :lol

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Thanks, Jason! That's some real motivation coming from you. Katsu-san, Bob, thanks :) I hope I can pull this off - I already made an excuse for building the descent stage, heheh. Hey Darren - my LHS carries 12x24 inch sheets. I once bought 4x8 (foot!) 1mm styrene from a shop - really cheap but softer and more flexy than Evergreen. I would've used Sintra but they seem more expensive than styrene here. I read you could dunk them in boiling water, pull out and form to your desired shape with your fingers then "freeze" under the tap. And repeat if you make a mistake. Sounds like the "magic" material. I've never worked on expanded PVC before though so I chickened out and just used trusty old styrene. But they say it glues well with superglue and can be painted even without primer. I've seen lots of mecha models and costumes here made of sintra with shapes almost impossible to imagine with styrene. Someday I'll be brave enough to try. At least this LM is free of complex curves. Grumman did a fine job with the design - ugly for some as it's all function than form but I think the odd shape looks cool.

One more panel to go for this direction.

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

This build is reminding me of something I used to wonder about...and actually still do: how was that thing able to break out of the moon's gravity? It doesn't seem as if it would have enough fuel on board for that. I'm no physicist, but it seems it'd have to attain something like 4,000 miles per hour to be able to do that! :confused

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Thanks for that! Alas, no stores like that here...:(

It's starting to take shape now and I can see the silhouette starting to emerge. Although, that doesn't explain away your dubious music tastes..........Bob James!!!??? :eek

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Heheheh. Those are the cool cats bro! Dave Grusin, Bob James, Lee Ritenour, Steve Gadd, Chick Corea, Miles Davis,
Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, (just not his Ascension album- now, THAT, is wierd!

Looks like a multi-level parking lot.

set1003cutupsomefoambul.jpg

Cut up some styrofoam bulkers/fillers to the proper height and glued on with some foam fusion

Built up spacers for last layer.

Glued last panel on. Looks like there wasn't any real need for the styrofoam sandwich treatment. The panels are remarkably stiff with just the styrene supports/spacers.

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Uffff... amazing work Crackerjazz... I love Eagle model !!!!!!!... and 1/18 scale
in spanish: ESTA INCREIBLEEEEEEEEE..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! QUIERO MAS DE ESTO....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Looking really incredible! It's so complex, too!

Leave the styrofoam in, if I were you, though. It's good insulation in the cold depths of space....

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

Wow! Very complex structure. Awesome build.

And I love all those musicians too:lol

Re: Crackerjazz' 1/18 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle (Apollo 11)

There's just wa-ay too much talent around here!

I don't know what to say about this one, Mr. Jazz: I've used up all my descriptive adjectives over in Yuumi's build thread! Feel free to plug in any one of those here, though: ___________ ..! :thumbsup

Re: 1/10 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle Ascent Stage

Bob, Darren, Katsu-san, thanks for your kind words, guys! Really appreciate it. :) Roback, muchas gracias mi amigo (I knew Spanish 101 would come in handy). I've changed the title as I'll be building just the ascent stage of the LM-5. Tried to do the leg parts in Solidworks and found out I couldn't haha - especially that "sculpted" pivot link at the top end of the main strut - it was driving me nuts. I'll work on it in the future but I'll stick to the ascent stage for now to make the project a little bit more realistic for me - something more achievable. At least it'll be bigger - RC grade, scalewise, at 1/10. But it surely won't be doing any real flying.

Darren, I left the styrofoam in there. They wouldn't budge :) Foam Fusion doing too much of a good job holding the stryfoam and styrene together. And Katsu-san, we'll have lots to talk about besides models then if I get lucky enough to travel to Japan someday and meet you.

Surgical precision ... I want more!!
I am very attentive to this thread, this model will make history! :popcorn:popcorn

I love how this build of crackerzazz's seems to occupy some strange land somewhere in between detailed blueprints and a pop-up book. It's a lot of fun to watch this. Other than it keeps me from spending time on my own build, I've nothing negative to say about it! :lol

Hmm, I deleted my own post by mistake trying to add something. Anyway, thanks guys, glad you like it so far. I did some good progress on this oddly-shaped spacecraft. I'll skip over that engine bell panel at the bottom for later as I try to figure where to place a mounting point.
