1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Mmmmmmm.....Drill Press!!! One of the best tools to have around the shop. There is just no substitute for a good drill press. Enjoy the new toys and great progress on the greeblies!

Read the entire thread, wow... just wow. Such awesome work, attention to detail, and determination. I am so happy I found this (I found it way later than I should have though) Amazing work all around and what an awesome set of new toys!

Hi Gang,

Early morning update... a little more forward progress!

I'm going to make another attempt at this greeblie
20150428_162702_zpsevkxsljm.jpg

New LED panel boxes - this new design will make the guys VERY happy
20150428_163005_zps8opgwfsf.jpg

Compared to old - very similar
20150429_055419_zpsavxqstby.jpg

The panel now holds 10 LEDs (1 LED for 4 panel windows) instead of 36 different colored LEDs - this will make wiring a little easier

Hey Sofa.

So this may not be the proper place to post this, since your build is (at least for now ) limited to the cockpit, but I know from following you guys that you have a broader goal of some day identifying all of the greeblies in the Falcon. I was watching this scene from Empire and noticed those silver oxygen canister looking objects from which Luke is breathing ... don't know if those have been ID'd yet but they look a lot like the silver glass liner from my vintage thermos ... maybe a slightly different shape, but could they be liners from some other thermos? Or perhaps they are metal and something else all together. Just figured I'd throw it out there.

Thermos Liner. Note the round bottom ...

Hi MB,

GREAT FIND! It amazes me how much common everyday "stuff" the designers used and were able to disuise something out of this world. Def going into the catalog of things to get! ;)

Keep those eyes open!

THANKS! There are already numerous little projects/reasons for me to use the drill press! Of course now I have to look at buying all the different bits! ;)

HI GF,

Thanks so much for the kind words. But more so your taking the time to read through the entire thread - there will be a quiz! ;)

We're slowly getting this cockpit up to ESB level... we hope we don't let you guys down!

Stay Tuned!

If I'm not mistaken... Just behind the thermos liners appear to be 4 vertically mounted transparant plastic engine model parts from Revell's 350 Engine model? That part was also found in the cockpit on one of the nose panels.

Interesting, I must have missed those! Man, they really did used that Revell kit all over the place ... I'm most familiar with the parts they used on the ESB/ROTJ DL-44s but I think you're right. I'll surely be keeping my eyes open, looking for new greeblies adds a whole 'nother element of fun, and a whole 'nother excuse to rewatch the OT.

You are absolutely correct! It def adds a new level of fun. Every now and then I'll have that moment of "BINGO! That's what that is!" More times than not it's "well what the heck is that?" ;)

Hi Gang,

Check this out! Remember those pieces I sprayed with several coats of gloss black? I received this chrome paint by Spaz Stix in the mail today claiming that it is in fact "chrome paint". Did it work?

20150429_155237_zpso78prahp.jpg

I painted the eye bolts
20150429_161506_zpsgfatf4km.jpg

And these two greeblies
20150429_161513_zpspbsbmvjm.jpg

And this little guy at the bottom - you can clearly see the difference between the Spaz Stix and the silver paint I've been using. But...
20150429_172621_zpsfey3gnbw.jpg

I placed all the greeblies in position. At first sight I was REALLY skeptical... I don't think it worked. But then something caught my eye!
20150429_172631_zpsximkytmp.jpg

Well I'll be darned! And this was after only 3 coats. The directions say to add more layers for a better mirror finish! I'm impressed!
20150429_172647_zps8wr0oojo.jpg

This guy is next along with several other cockpit greeblies that appear to be chrome
20150429_173930_zpswrv82xhv.jpg

While the chrome coolness was drying I finally added some color to this greeblie
20150429_174044_zpsu3sltauk.jpg

Finished one of two nose panel boxes
20150429_174049_zps8e8xq8qx.jpg

I then broke out the new tools! I was going to drill out this area of the wood but realized I really should get some square hole drill bits.

Hi Gang,

After doing a little research on the square hole / Mortise bits... wow... they are not cheap! So, I made the decision to hold off on that purchase and simply designed the greeblie "housing" using acrylic
20150430_202254_zpssai6l6dz.jpg

20150430_202806_zpspezc7fn0.jpg

Since the laser cutter cannot cut bevel edges I designed VERY tiny pieces to fill the bevel edge - I'll add filler and sand smooth

This is where the greeblie will sit - there are 2 required for this panel
20150430_204214_zpsmtzmebd1.jpg

I also added a mounting hole inside the greeblie
20150430_204225_zpsp86fo6pt.jpg

Let's add some filler

20150430_222750_zpskhsp4s2z.jpg

And then of course... just a few more greeblies to build.
20150430_204327_zps2p5zt3po.jpg

Don't Go Away!

in my experience rustoleum 'metallic finish' chrome from walmart has been the best looking of any chrome paint ive ever used, the gold isnt bad either. it seems to be the closest to vacmetalizing you can get in a can, everything else always seems to turn out a bright silver.

Hi Gang,

I think it's about time for an update!

We'll start the update with a 3D print Jessie designed and Daniel printed for one of MANY cockpit greeblies...
20150502_123724_zpsyz0byevj.jpg

Daniel placed the "vent" style greeblie in a beaker with a little bit of acetone. The acetone is heated and the vapor smooths the ABS plastic.
20150502_123901_zpsvfuweqjt.jpg

Jessie was a huge help this weekend. We're really trying to nail down this bizarre greeblie

Another jaw dropping update!

Just curious, are you going to weather all this stuff to give it that used feel?

Hey M,

Thanks! It was a GREAT weekend! Weathering? hmmmmm... I don't know. That would be really tough to do - from an emotional standpoint. Looking at all the new Vanity Fair images coming out, the designers clearly weathered the panels - they look SO GOOD!

I dont know it I can bring myself to do it... lol

Hey A,

I had not seen that image at all! THANK YOU for posting! I'm now looking though all the new images from the Vanity Fair photoshoot and the vid! So much goodness!

Hi D,

I've been using the "metallic / chrome" paints for quite a while. And you're absolutely correct - most of them just out a bright silver. This is the first paint that I had actually buffed to a higher sheen and reflection. I was very impressed! :)

Hi Gang,

May the 4th Be With You! It has been exactly 3 full years since the beginning of this project! 3 YEARS! WOW! I would like to take the time to personally thank all of you and the FSF team for all the success we've had these past several years! And thank you to everybody for your support, guidance, contributions and friendship(s) throughout this build. Without all of you and your continued interest... we wouldn't be here.

Here's to another 3 more years - let's hope I'm still not tinkering! ;)

May the 4th Be With You!
