1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Now... How am I going to address the issue? I would have alot of trimming to do around the edges of the panels and beams. Still a long way off but it's definately something that is always bouncing around in my head.

I'd think long and hard on the issue before I started cutting if I were you. Maybe do a small-scale prototype proof of concept model first. It seems as though that may be right, but I was just spitballing, so it may very well turn out not to work the way my brain says it should (a chronic problem that rears its ugly head when I start building things).

Either way, good luck, and I'm glad I could help.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

BLAST that dreaded Formica! Oh how it haunts me so!

Interesting find with the Formica. It makes sense - light weight, thin, etc... But I really hate that stuff! lol

Thank you posting the high rez image. Definately helps!

Really? I thought the complete opposite. Ticked off, inconvenienced, woman problems, best friend can't put his dang ship back together...

a tip or word to the wise,
formica or laminate is a finish. not really meant to be painted.
if you want a black panel, black laminate.
no painting required. just a further 2 cents....

i've been hinting for awhile. i was under the assumption you had that blueprint already.
as far as perspex windows goes, i believe they just left the pladstic out. i don't see them in the behind the scenes photos and it would mess with their bluescreen. yes, back in the day it wasn't green lol.

the cockpit set is color laminated for the most part.

i'd wager disney will not be using painted panels when or if they do theirs....

plain grey flooring panels were painted i believe as you can see scratches in the paint in the scene where R2 drags threepio across the floor in ESB.

Hi Gang,

No need to bother you with the specifics...

WE HAVE A CANOPY!

I took a much easier approach with this one... It fits perfectly!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Fantastic job on that canopy...keep up the good work, it'll all pay up at the end:)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Once finished, you should put light bars around the edges of the garage door to resemble the interior of the Death Star docking bay, and paint the garage door to look like a star field.

The panel above Leia's head looks like an escape hatch.

Hi D,

Believe it or not, those panels are everywhere throughout the SW universe. I believe there are 6 just in the cockpit, a few more in the gunner stations, cantina, Star Destroyer, etc... It's a very popular set dressing.

I was hoping to make one and then vacuform several before the GMX show but I don't I will be able to get to it.

I just spent my afternoon reading through this thread. You're my hero!

Thank you very much. That means I must be doing something right! :) Those are very kind words.

Hi M,

When I started the project I used Formica when I skinned the sides of the center console. I was hoping for a nice smooth finish and my experience with MDF was limited at best. While it does provide a nice smooth finish and a simple form of protection against dents I would NEVER work with it again unless it was with simple shapes and I had a variety colors to work with.

Not sure what material will be used for the 2nd cockpit. I'm sure Chris Lee has been thinking that through along with about 3,598,214 other minor things one thinks about when trying to build a full scale MF. ;)

Hi Joberg,

Thanks! These beams / panels were a lot tougher than I thought - as was MOST of the cockpit. But the hard part is over! Now it's detailing - the fun stuff! Thanks again!

I want the first ride. Looks fantastic!

You got it, my friend! Now... if we can only find some seats... ;)

:) That would be very cool! I need to put some kind of "backdrop" there to hide the garage door. I thought about mounting the whole thing to a truck frame and just cruising down the road...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

With the canopy nearing "semi" completion I can start to focus on other parts of the cockpit. This morning I started getting measurements for these access panels. Still a work in progress...

I created 3 options...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Isnt that silver thing the same piece that you placed on the throttle console?
Silly me i forgot to post the other usable half of the scan that shows the other panel too that have some minor differences.

Hi A,

GREAT PIC! It is the same part. It appears to be only a piece of the larger greeblie. They are located EVERYWHERE in the MF, several on the XWing and Snow Speeders, and even the top of the medical droid. Fellow RPFer, Wavey, has been on a mission to find out what that part is. We have a serial number and everything. And just like the dome panel lights... it remains a mystery.

Fortunately, we now have a accurate 3D model of the part (Thanks to Starkiller) and I plan to cast many. :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

It's still too early to bring out the power tools... I don't like to peeve the neighbors... I'm creating a paper template for the diamond pattern blanket that rests on the rear canopy panels / beams. There are several local fabric stores that I know carry / supply this pattern so I'll be making a trip in the next few minutes...

Minor updates...

Purchased the diamond pattern fabric to dresses the canopy transition

20131020_134453_zpsae8d529a.jpg

And painted the quad arms silver - I'll then add weathering and hydraulic leaks like before

I'm hoping this will add a little more visual interest / realism to the arms

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Another weekend wrapped up...

After painting the quad arms silver it was time to weather and dirty them up. This will take a few passes...
20131020_173632_zpsb92aa672.jpg

I then cut the material for the pit transition
20131020_171513_zps8d367c66.jpg

Had to perform some minor surgery on a few panels
20131020_164300_zps1d402ef2.jpg

Was able to finish several window channels
20131020_163920_zpsdbcfa4a6.jpg

20131020_161313_zpsb63a4476.jpg

These last pieces are difficult because I have to marry them up against two slightly different pieces with differing angles

Now I'm off to see if I can finish the transition padding (diamond material)
