1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Whit this quality you could probably use it as a very valuable spare part for the Millennium Falcon (in the movies of course)!

You should not rent it out to parties for kids, but for mature people who won't damage this treasure down or break anything ;) I know from experience that some children can, well... Quick or very efficiently break something.

Have you decided for what type of glass (as windows) you are going to use, if any?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

The window channels are DONE!

I also started to box in the 4 horizontal beams leaving the bolt areas open

I then started the sanding process and some minor surgery

Leaving a gaping hole ;)

Tomorrow... ALL the beams come off and get detailed and paint - then the ESB panels get their coat of paint and pin stripes... Another race to my self imposed finish line...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

The window channels look good, amazing the difference little details like that make. Hope you make your deadline, I'm confident you will.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Those channels are clean lookin' for sure! It'll kick some serious behinds with the windows in:cool

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Work continues on the details... As usual, I was hoping to be MUCH farther along. I'm about to run out of wood so I might just move forward, paint what I have and then begin disassembly to get to the ESB panels...

These tiny thin strips go on the very edge of the beams creating a lip around the window edges
20131027_130410_zpsec0db23f.jpg

Despite all the filler it looks really good. Once everything is sanded smooth and painted, it will / should really look the part

Lots of work on this beam

I was going to remove all the beams and then add the details but thought it would be better to keep everything in place so I could properly align all the strips

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Love it, lots of work with the MDF but it's all worth it. You're right, that black line for the widows is really striking:)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Sofaking, what will you do if the cockpit for the Falcon looks extremely different in the new movie?

I just love the black center line

Still A LOT od work to do on the edges - filling, sanding, etc...

The paint does seal the MDF and, in my opinion, helps make it easier to see the bad areas...

Hi Gang,

Last of the days updates...

Overhead canopy panel

Back side of the angled window - this is where the diamond pattern padding will Velcro in place so there is no need to paint

The other side - waiting for paint to dry...

I can't imagine how hard it is to measure and build these curved thingamajigs. Do you make cardboard templates, or just rely on the dimensions in the Sketchup plans? Do you have rolls of blueprints saved?

For my project, I have a lot of templates which were made out of heavy paper. I saved them, putting them into a 3-ring binder. Maybe someone will hire me to build them a curved desk someday. Who knows. I'd never have time for that, only having about 2 hours a day to work on projects at home.

My $0.02. . . .Lucasfilm should be using THIS for the new movies. Absolutely brilliant work. What next? Life sized AT-AT bridge? Too much cool.

Too late. lol... FWIW, I read that the interior Falcon is being rebuilt at Pinewood Studios for Ep. 7. Will be interesting to see how much stays the same, and how much changed after all these years of "Han's special mods".

Hi Kev,

I'm a LONG way off from looking into renting the pit. I would certainly condsider allowing space, rocket and science centers showcasing the pit but again... it's "...such a long way from here..."

Now that the wndow channels are done Ican't help but think about the type of glass I can use. Plexi is probably the best material. After GMX I'm going to buy some thick cardstock and create templates. I think I'll be able to cut it - depending on the thickness... :)

Hey C,

Thanks! Isn't it amazing what one tiny detail can do? I'm really happy with the way they turned out. As far as the deadline... it's a delicate balancing act... I hope to make it to the other side.

Hey J,

Thanks! I'm looking forward to adding the plexi - wont be till after GMX. :(

- - - Updated - - -

Great detailing indeed.

Thank you, Sir!

Hi C,

Believe it or not... he was SO terrified to touch anything. His only word was "... whoa...". I think I did something right. :)

Hey J,

Thank you so much. When I finished that first beam and stood back... I was really happy with the contrast between the 3 colors. That black line just made everything pop! :)

Sofaking, what will you do if the cockpit for the Falcon looks extremely different in the new movie?

Hey Red,

I'm not worried about that at all (from a build perspective only). Why? This is a ANH / ESB hybrid version of our favorite ship. But also, if the EP VII version different... Depending on how cool or pathetic it looks... I guess I have to build a whole new one. ;)

- - - Updated - - -

Brilliant! I'm alway amazed at the amount of progress you make in a short period.

Hey SB,

Thank you! Believe it or not, I think I need to recalibrate my "expectation" meter. I never get as far ahead as I hope or expect to be by days end. I have 3 days before packing up for GMX and I still haven't reached the ESB panels. I'll be lucky to have paint on them... UGH...

Hey DJ,

Follow this link - this shows the process to finding those curves using the foamcore templates... It was NOT easy...

Yes, I did SAVE all of the curved templates. Not sure why. lol

Hi CDN,

Thanks so much. That's a very high compliment. I appreciate the very kind words. I would probably go into shock if LucasFilm / Disney contacted me. :wacko

EXACTLY... I HOPE they stay true to the original. I read an article that said JJA will be using more sets that CGI - that's a postive step forward!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I don't think I'm going to put the canopy back together before GMX. As you all know I've begun painting. While many of the beams will NOT have the thin strips added, I want to add paint to at least give the canopy a finished look. Putting everything back together with the limited amount of time I have will only take time away from getting to the ESB panels. The more panels I remove, the closer I am to the entire pit being taken apart...

So... out first look at "the" painted canopy interior with padding won't be until Friday... :(

Let's hope for the best!
