The Walking Dead Season 5 Discussion (Spoilers)

What about the voice on the radio. I know it was in his head but it was talking about a group attacking others with Machetes.

Yep it was just in his head, actually it was Andrew Lincoln's voice. he was reading news reports from the genocide in Rowanda

My wife's question about the episode was this. Tyreese sees a mess of dead people talking to him (what was it 6 people?) and none of them were Karen?

She would have been there but wasn't available for filming ;)

Did anyone else wonder what was going on with the torsos in the back of the truck? I mean, I get that we saw the limbs at the gated community, but then the reveal of the limbs in the back of that truck? Kinda makes you wonder who, or what, the hell happened, doesn't it?

You'll find out soonish kind of.

I think I know where they are going with the chopped up walkers.
The Whisperers.

They are a few years away from anything close to that

I'm waiting for them to show up but thinking more along the lines of....

http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/The_Saviors and their wall of impaled zombies.

Not this season, youll have to wait awhile longer, think more along the lines of
The scanvegers though ;)

Also starting next week....
you get some nice hints/intro to a familiar face from the comics who happens to be gay...Also, get ready for a huge storm coming

When I saw the promo and some of the visuals (which I gather proved to be sort of a fakeout), I figured they were headed in that direction.

I know folks are bummed by Tyrese's death and how the show seems to be trending into the realm of "misery porn" where the characters exist basically to have bad things happen to them, but...honestly, I view most of that as development, and I strongly suspect it won't go to waste.

Many people look at the Walking Dead as being about the survivors surviving in the apocalypse. And, to be fair, much of the story is about that. But what I really see being the much larger theme of both the show and the comic is as an exploration of the concepts of civilization and community. How do communities form? How do they survive? What aspects of civilization are conditional on your surroundings, rather than moral imperatives, and where do the moral imperatives give way to basic survival needs?

From the earliest days of the show and the comic, that's what this story has been about. You see it explored in a range of different moments, from the Atlanta survivor camp and who wields authority/power there, to the first attempt at building a community on Hershel's farm, to the prison and the ultimate conflict with the Governor and his community, to the run-ins with the cannibals and Gabriel, and beyond. At each step, the questions remain "Is this how you run your community, given your surroundings? What of your previous civilization do you maintain? What aspects do you set aside? Can you ever bring back that which you put aside?" We see the characters grapple with these issues at various points, too, choosing various approaches to the question of morality vs. survival. And at times, certain characters decide to opt out, because they realize at some point that they can't exist in this world, and they can't be part of a given community. Dale and Tyrese, for example. But to some extent, even Andrea and Merle.

I don't, however, think that any of this is pointless or that it's all just questions with no answers. The answers come, but they have to come out of experience and in context. The main issue with the show, I think, is that it's got kind of slow pacing at certain points, like, when the most recent community crumbles and the survivors are on the move to the next one. Those allow for interesting character moments, but over several seasons, they've gotten kind of tedious and drawn out a bit much. The end result is that the show ends up feeling like it's just putting characters through the wringer, and barely even paying lip service to hope for something better. But I do think that, in the long run, the show will prove to be more than just "misery porn."

And to that article, only three out of the five I only agree with. Two of them are necessary evils.

And before you ask, these are the necessary evils, because without them, the show would get dull real quick.
#2. There Is Always an Ultimate Goal That Never Pays Off (Because if you had it where they went somewhere and it paid off, then your audience will end up bored with being at one location. The Prison was an example of this)
#1. Rick Struggles With His Humanity the Exact Same Way Each Season (because if you had a character that doesn't struggle with the choices he makes, then all you'd have is a cardboard cutout of a character. And as a result, you end up getting a story where you don't care about the characters. There has to be more to a survival story than the physical act of surviving).

If these weren't in the show, you'd lose your audience at the end of Season 3.

Man. I thought that was a great episode. Looks like I need to pick up more comics. The show is getting close to where I left off....

Dear Lord I wish something would happen. Worst episode ever so far.

I disagree. I think this is one of the best character episodes. In fact, I think this episode serves as a great reminder of how difficult it is to survive in the world of The Walking Dead.

I love the nod to the comics with the group walking down the road and the Walkers in a pack behind them (for those who didn't read the comics, this happened with Rick, Michonne and Glenn when they discover Woodbury the first time. That when the trio were walking down the road, the Walkers in the woods spotted then and then began to follow them, and as they walked, other Walkers joined into the pack behind them), as well as Rick using "We are the Walking Dead" in the speech (though the one in the show is more an attempted hopeful speech, whereas in the comics, it's the realization that everyone's going to die sooner or later kind of thing like it was in the comic).

Also, when Rick was talking about his grandfather and World War II, I swear, this song popped into my head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0FAosDi4XA

It was ok. The dog part made me kinda sick. But I would likely eat them too, just wouldn't enjoy it.

the flood of walkers at the barn door was crazy. Like why is everyone just digging in and blocking the door?? Grab the sword or pointy stick and poke them damn fools. Less walkers pushing and the dead ones make a Great Wall in front of the door. Then it's morning and it's like nothing happen..was it a dream? Nope a sharknado took out every damn tree and walker around the barn. Yet the crappy old barn is fully intact. Not even a damn plank is missing. I didn't know South Carolina had the sweetest damn Amish carpenters this side of the Mississippi river. **** Zek and crew out did themselves with that raising.

Did Daryl have 2 burn marks? Like 1 for his bro & a new one for Beth now. It's his way to remember those so close to his heart I take it.

With the dog part, I was like, "Now they have food." But when I saw the dog collar sitting on the ground and covered in blood, it broke my heart. It reminded me of Season 1's episode "Guts", where Rick searches a recently killed zombie who they were about to chop up to use as camouflage, and he reads the driver's license and lists what's in the wallet. Much like how that wallet was meant to remind the characters, and us, that the Walkers were once humans, seeing that dog collar with the dog's name on the tag reminded me that those dogs may have been someone's pets, that someone had loved them before the whole world went away. Maybe that's just the dog person in me, but to me, it was just heartbreaking for me.

To be fair, do we even know how many Walkers were outside that door? I mean, the shot was so quick, I thought the numbers were greater than the group that had been following on the road. Enough of them would have broken into the barn in a shorter time (like the chain length fence at the prison last season). BTW, what's a blank and what does it have to do with a barn?

I didn't see two burn marks (hard to really tell if there were), but I think Daryl was burning himself as a means of trying to avoid the pain of loss he feels for Beth (which didn't work because he broke down afterwards).

Auto correct changed it from "plank" as a plank of wood / board. Not even a board was missing off the barn. Yet all trees are down around it.

The 'last time on Walking Dead segment' was better than the entire last episode. The dog scene was a little sad, but they were hardly man's best friend anymore.

This episode was better, and looks like with the introduction of Aaron then they are jumping pretty far ahead in the comics. A good choice, they've butchered everything else up to this point. I can't imagine how they can screw up the Free Zone.

yea when they started to all brace the barn door I really didnt't see the point. whats the end game there? hold the door back till the zombies get tired and stop? surely have some people holding the door while other go try to thin them out. lucky for them a tornado apparently hit with precision
