Thoughts on Renfield

I just saw it and... I liked it. A little predictable and formulaic, sure. And I was absolutely right about the graphic violence. It neither made nor broke the movie. If they'd gone for a PG-13 instead of an R, it would have been fundamentally the same movie. Based on the credits, now I can't wait for the Blu-Ray release to see the deleted dance number. Call it morbid curiosity. Aside from that? Recommended.

Now, I might have flipped the script. Renfield in in the drivers seat. Dracula moves to get away from the horrors of WW2 and the Cold War.

Renfield shows Dracula a filmstrip of Trinity….Dracula has never seen anything like it…and he winds up feasting on bugs and skulking at night killing Renfield’s enemies in Real Estate.

Renfield is the real blood-sucker here…and Dracula is the one who is broken…as Lestat was with the chopper and it’s false light.

“You need me to be your day man Vlad. Someone to pay bills so your coffin won’t be dragged into daylight after a foreclosure. Castle Dracula fell to Tiger tanks and T-34s. Without me, where would you be?-you little fop and your evening clothes.”

“Naw…you are my night man. Here is a photo of my competitor at ReMax…pay him a little visit this evening…”

Here, poor Vlad is out of his depth in this modern world. The scene in the original where the estate is sold? That’s when we see the real predator emerge. The movie begins with a soliloquy about being caught in the hands of a monster…but it was Dracula narrating as the red herring..not Renfield. He knew Dracula was a vampire from the start..and vulnerable to cold iron..just not bullet lead.
That script needs to be made..
The title..
"Of Man and Monsters"

I saw it over the weekend and loved it. My wife and I thought that it was hilarious and it looked like Nick Cage was really getting into his role and having a blast with it. And I loved Shohreh Aghdashloo in it too, she was really chewing up the scenery in it, she's just so good at those sorts of roles.

A perfect deep fake is to have Christopher Lee’s Dracula pursued by Vincent Price’s Witchfinder from Conqueror Worm. Both crushed in a flaming church. Mina Harker under Lord Byron’s influence revives him a la A.D. 1972.

Mina’s father is played by Cushing, but Helsing by Jack Palance, and a secret partner—Price! Accidentally revived as well.

Lee prevails and gets the meaty lines Langella got.

Picked it up on Blu-Ray. Sure enough the deleted dance number was included. Not sure what I expected, but it was, well... I can see why it was cut.
