OMG! I did it again... I must have the boxes mounted in front in a way that the belt from the rear seems natural to me in buckeling and I don't pay attention after I get the rest on. I just hold it up on him and am behind him to buckle it not looking.

Oh well. I might need to flop the belt around and put the boxes back on or just need to make sure I'm watching/remembering what I'm doing.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

My 3 1/2 year old daughter just saw this. Now she wants a Darth Vader costume!

Thanks! :lol

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Oh no! Sorry. This one is tougher to swallow, as my 6 yr olds trooper costume will fit him for a few years and then nick can wear it after that. This one, not so much. But at lest some of the costume pieces can work with others I can swap out- like a different helmet. Still, it's really more time than anything going into this. And I can always remake some new pieces if needed.

Or- just sell it later? Though, my wife likes to keep every costume in the storage bins. Just not sure what we are ever going to do with all of them. I can see keeping ours for emergency costume parties- but the kids will add up (and won't fit) at a certain point.

Every Vader needs a Saber...Right??

1) a Little plumbing pipe peice at the hardware store: $3.99
2) A PVC tube Fitting, that I cut down (shroud) and sanded threads off connection: $1.29
3) a universal sink stopper (inside pipe, but the end cap is chrome for bottom): had at home
4) Cut up zip ties for s test and possible use as grips: Had at home

Just need some greeblies buttons and a box (have an old bubble strip I can use)- and Nick will have a great little saber just to hang off his belt. This way he won't trip over the damn rubies or anything larger thats attached and hangs down past his knee. Will just have to bring the FX for photo ops

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

haven't gotten around to much with putting together the magic show. Did get a hook added for the chest armor to hold the chain on the cape down. Awaiting a lightsaber hook to add to the belt as well while I finish up the saber.

Sskunky... close up? Do you have a Tarantula? I picked one up while getting other things for the kids show. Prob won't use it for the kids, but having a ball with it.

Magice Show was a success this weekend. My dad and I still got it, although a bit rusty. Now I can get back to costume work.

I also stopped at Radio Shack yet again. Got 1 red LED, 1 Green LED, 3 Blinking RED leds, and will use to modify the chest box.

Also ordered some sample sized plexi glass to use on the chest box and maybe use for the green rectangles on the belt boxes. WIll have to see when those show which I like better.

Whoo hoo!! Blinky LEDs in and working. Can run off same battery box. Going to wire up an on off switch tonight and will post some pics. Maybe a video if I can.

Also, rubber car mat I found tonight have perfect grooves for the little light saber grips. All cut and ready to install.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

OK.. didn't get the switch wired like I had hoped (Flyers/Boston game got in the way).

For this mod:
1 sheet of thin Red translucent/transparency film- $1.99
Zap a gap and some accelorant
3 Blinky LEDs set ups- Radio Shack $3?/set up.

I cut the battery boxes off the blinky lights (each came with one). Just needed the LEDs that were hooked up to the board and wires coming out to tie together.

Connected all 3 together (reds to reds/blacks to blacks). These will eventually run off the same built in battery box that runs the breathing and movie lines on the toggle switches. I'll just run the hot to a switch so the Blinkies and the other two LEDs I add for the square lights can be turned on and off. Since the breathing effect and movie quotes only power when pressing the toggles.

I added the Red transparent film on the outside of each coin slot (zaped on), Then I had to cut the LED boards down just a bid so they all lined up and fit inside, in the recessed area (you need to remove the speaker to get there). I zapped those in place too and actually filled up quite a bit of the recessed area inside around the LED with zap a gap glue. This makes the whole rectangle light up from the front side, versus just seeig the round LED ligh up in the middle of it.

picture from the back/inside:
228110_2037865949032_1315757790_2421705_4058597_n.jpg

you can see where I cut out the rectangles as well. I need to clean those up a bit, but will be installing 1 red and 1 green LED in that recessed area, and then when my sample plexi glass peices come, I will install those over the top.

I did a quick test and the while the lights are not in movie accurate sequence- they do blink at slightly different rates- so it's just a random pattern that actually looks pretty good.

I took a quick 20 sec vid and put on facebook- but can't link here. I'll see if I can upload to youtube or something.

just testing-

not sure if this will work:

Getting close to done with this peice.

Thanks for following along.......

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

...not sure if this will work- tried Youtube for the first time

The Youtube video worked great and the chest unit looks AWESOME!!!

What I'm MOST impressed with on this piece is that it looks so much like the original movie-prop that it's 'scale' is not noticeable.

One of the things I've been most surprised by while working on 'child-scale' costumes, is that it's hard to sometimes show how SMALL these pieces are! I've actually have been trying to get a ruler in some of my pics just to help people understand how tiny some of these elements are.

Again, great work! :)

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Thanks. I know what you mean in trying to show sizes. That's one of the reasons why I had thrown in that Rubies Vader saber with the mini one I'm building. Once I get further along with it, I'll take a shot next to the FX saber as well. I love that I found a rubber floor mat for a car that will work great for the grips.

I got my sample plexi glass peices last night in the mail as well. I was super excited to crack more on the chest box, but it was Jacks 6th Bday (actual day) yesterday..... so we just hung outside by the lake and had dinner and played. Finally a decent day here in MN. It's been a real crappy spring thus far with cold n rain. 60 and sun, you just have to be outside! :lol

Jack n Nick dualing by the campfire last night- Jack got a few new toy sabers:

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Grrr.. Well, the green and red plexi glass looks good on the box= but not exactly what I hoped when the LEDs are on. You see the actual LED behind it. I may see what else I can do to hide that a bit... but I put up a quick vid with what it looks like as of now- sounds n all.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Been too busy with misc stuff, I haven't been able to work on this much. But, we did finally get a test fit in with the new chest box n lights, hook on the shoulder armor, and saber hook.

Can't really see the belt hook, but that Rubies is far too big hanging off it. I really Need to work on the mini saber some more me thinks...

I'd be honored! :lol

there's certainly a few more in the running though......

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Well- good day shopping and thrifty yesterday. Found another used Vader voice change lid at the thrift store for $5.

I'm going to take a stab at cutting that up and see what I can do in making a better dome. I'm excited again on this peice as I think it has more potential to end up like a Vader helmet, and I was dredding working on the helmet where it's at-cause I really didn't know which direction to go therefore putting it off.

But- for those following along that are building for their kids- or just have kids, I just found out about these StrideRites yesterday when my wife asked me to get new shoes for the kiddos while I was out and about. I ran across these, and well..... being the geek I am- bought on the spot.

PS.. Th Vaders aren't selling well (so the lady said) so they are on sale. Their fun, but in all honesty, pretty ugly in my opinion. Nick loves them though.

forgot to mention, I also found thrifting the other day a pair of cheap black shoulder pads at the thrift store for $1.99. Perfect size and partially shaped shoulder bells I could heat up to bend more and cut to fit along side the breast plate.

heated and formed just a bit more: will trim down to line up

229405_2061451738662_1315757790_2453428_4899417_n.jpg

will look better I think once on and held in place around the chest box and held down with the belt.

This completes the "soft parts":
224718_2061452138672_1315757790_2453429_3534075_n.jpg

Next up- cut shoulder bells to fit and attach

Left to do: Sand my green LED rectangle covers to attach to each of the belt boxes. Make the main front belt buckle. Give definition & design to breast/shoulder bells, Shins, and of course the helmet- Then paint.

Coming along and having a ball
