I'm still up for it, in an alternative universe kind of way.
Having said that, I thought Thunderdome was pretty awful, so it's not like my heart is broken or anything. MM and RW are two of the all time great action movies, and they can stand on their own without anything shaking them from their (VERY high) pedestal. Would I have liked to get back to the low budget, anarchic, independent, punk rock garage band aesthetic of the first two? Sure. But you can't go home again, I guess. Overproduced and slick is the name of the game these days. It's a pity.
That's about where I come out on it. Thunderdome is weak. Not unwatchable, but really not great. The first two, though, are genius as action films.
And I heartily agree with your point that "you can't go home again." I wish Hollywood AND the fans (especially the fans) would realize this and stop trying to chase the high they got the first time they saw this or that film.

Come on guys, Thunderdome was a lot of fun when we all saw it on the 80's, I liked it.
