Lifesize ED-209 Build. NOW WITH EVEN MORE ED on p.23!!!

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

If its eyes had been bigger it would have looked like the inbread Disney Cars version of ED ... though the Raving Rabbid is a close second ;)

I appreciate the foam advice. While not in immediate plans (asked purely out of curiosity), I will hopefully now have stored the warning in the back of my head somewhere to trigger alarms of some sort if/when the opportunity presents itself.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

Yesterday was a busy day. First, I had Lopez whittle out these guys:

Those are forming bucks for the linkages that will attach to the armpit gimbals.

I also had him make this:

I've been referring to it as the "oil filter." When it's molded and cast, there will be a pair of them on either side of the back:

I also did a bit more filling and prep work on the pelvis:

The "tail light" area on the back of the body was filled in:

The elbow parts were smoothed out and given my standard gloss coat of lightish red:

I also made up a quick corrugated bellows section to go between the armpit and the elbow:

It'll be molded and cast directly onto the elbow section:

Otherwise, it was a day of small progress on many things:

More to come today. Stay tuned...

Stunning work. Setting the Bar somewhere in the upper stratosphere as usual.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

I always thought the "oil filters"were tear gas/smoke launchers etc for crowd control.

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

I think it looks kinda like a puma ;)

Why "light red"? Was it on sale?

Puma? Stop making up animals. Besides, they already have a name for light red. You know what is? Pink.

Hi There, Impressive amount of work. Can you tell me what you are using in your molding process? It looks like pink silicon. How long is the working time, and how do you stop it from all running on the floor?

Thanks,
Brian

I'm using Mold Max 30. After the print coat sets up, the following layers have a thixotropic additive mixed in in order to cling to the vertical surfaces.

Once the silicone is nice and thick, I use fiberglass to lay up a mothermold:

In other news, extensive bodyshop work continues.

The armpits are nearly finalized:

The pelvis is now ready for polish and molding:

I've also got a handful of small detail parts nearly ready for molding. Here's the finalized oil filter/smoke launcher, widget:

So progress continues:

Stay tuned...

It appears like many late nights and getting wired when you guys put on the masks. Either that or alcohol.

Looks great!

Subbed.

BTTF and RoboCop is among my favourites. I am planing to purchase the Hot Toys ED & Robo combo and maybe one day, build a 1:1 version as you are doing.

Keep up the good work

Re: Lifesize ED-209 Build. Check it out. You have twenty seconds to comply...

What is the working time on Mold Max 30, and how many coats usually?

Thanks,
Brian

I may not be the best person to ask. You can find all there is to know about this material by clicking HERE.

In other news, I've got the first couple of pulls out of the mold for the inner elbow piece:

For some reason, the silicone decided not to let go of the prototype. So I actually had to cut it out in quite a few places. The end result was a lot of chunky weirdness on the finished casting, but I'll be able to salvage it.

Here's the main body as of yesterday:

I think it's going to work:
