Genderbend Costume Copyright Question

Haven't posted here for a while so if this is in the wrong place please move accordingly.

I'm trying to find out if IP copyright still applies if a character had been genderbend.

Or if a character has been altered significantly but still recognizable as that character, e.g. steampunk SW characters.

Any insight and feedback would be greatly appreciated.
