"Captain America, how exciting!" TWS TFA Rescue USO and Ultimates WW2

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Now Ultimate

Hey Captain A, absolutely Patriotic. It reminds me of actual pictures of my late uncle, who was a hero over in Burma, during WW2. He assisted and rescued 2 of the Meralls Maurauders. He had a picture of him and a few coremen wearing leather coats andthat really comes very close. I understand your hesitantcy on the pockets but with a little terry cloth or a very fine grade sandpaper then resurfacing of the dye or leather conditioner or gun tool oil, it will fix it right as rain. Anyway, thank again for this incredible craftsmanship and a walk down memory lane.
Thanks,
callibr1735:thumbsup

Thank you. This is the greatest complement I have ever received, they truly are the Greatest Generation.

I took your advice and used a 320 model sanding stick and an emery board to the pocket and flap.

Can still tell that it is different leather but at least in now looks like it belongs on the jacket.
If anyone notices, I'll just say it is in tune with the rigger reinforced pants and other such in the field mods.

The jacket is now done.
I did not and DO NOT RECOMMEND using Scotchguard. The dye immediately starts to lift, thanks to the acetone.
To make sure, the dye is set just keep running the jacket in your washing machine with the water and vinegar mixture until the water is clear or you can do it by hand in the bathtub.
IF using your washer, please, run HOT water and soap with nothing else in it to make sure all the dye is gone.

This is a color comparison of a US Wings A-2, US Wings Indiana Jones, and the modified Rescue.

Thanks, Kevin.

Its funny that a knife will stop cutting leather and foam but will still do a number on your fingertip.

Redid the back of the heater shield to make it more movie-ish.

The back of the medieval shield painted silver was just too ugly after seeing what the back of the movie USO shield should look like.

Laid everything out for the first time to see what it looks like together and do a color test photo.

Fly4v, I have been following you for a month and I just wanted to say your jacket came out great! I will be following your thread when I purchase my own (I've been spending too much on paint for my shield at the moment).

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Rescue Jacket Completed

Battlehawk, Hope that this will help when you start on your jacket. Your shield from scratch is excellent.

Just started fiberglassing the inside of the TFA Helmet.
Just doing this little bit makes an entire Iron Man or Halo suit seem even more impressive.

Fly, I am flipping loving this build man. So much hard work going into it and it is turning out absolutely fantastic! "Captain America, how exciting!" indeed. I love that we all have this great hobby together. It's an unspoken morale booster to see what others are doing on the same project and how they go about it. Way to go bud!

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Fly, where did you get the goggles from your first post (w/ the M-1 helmet)? Man, they are spot on and the only ones I've found were either real WWII for $450 or very authentic reproductions (that would still be of open cockpit quality) for $250. Nice work by the way, on what you've done. Looking forward to more progress :)

-Edit: sorry, I should have not skimmed over your last post :facepalm

Put the first coating on the outside of the helmet.

It is Durham's Wet Putty over a mixture of white glue and epoxy resin. Once smooth, plan to put another coating of resin.

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

I took a larger gauge nail and made a small depression in the leather, then cut the head off of some finishing nails, (like small picture hanger nails) and used a small dab of CA glue to quick set it in the depression. So far so good and they are a pretty decent size. If you leave a small portion of the nail shank (like less than a 16th of an inch) it gives the glue a bit more to bite on. Thanks for the nomenclature number for the goggles, I had it written down somewhere and lost it. Hope this helps...

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Along the same lines as Bobby, I clipped the heads off sewing pins. Only difference is I left a little more of the pin body attached, and made a small hole for it to sink into and glued in place

Re: "Captain America, how exciting!" Ultimate, Rescue and starting TFA Hero

Thanks for the information.

I was able to get the helmet roughed out before the thunderstorms chased me inside.
Really need a garage or workshop.

The helmet is very solid and makes a very reassuring thud like when you drop your Kevlar.
If you notice the shiny spot on the left cheek I had to fix a minor crack in the lip detail but no damage to the fiberglass inside.
The wet putty really absorbs super glue so I believe it will take the final resin coating well.
Just have to get the helmet shaped and smoothed.
