BBC Micro:bit as a perfect model spacecraft controller?

So the BBC have made a little educational microcontroller for kids:

I was thinking it'd be pretty perfect for controlling the lighting in a model. You could program in loops with dashboard lights that flash realistically, not like Christmas trees or railway crossings. You could control motorised devices, and other switched items. It'll run off two AAs (not 5VDC like a lot of microcontrollers). Since it's aimed at kids it's easy to program. You might be able to operate it over Bluetooth from a mobile. And it's cheap!

Only problem is accessing the LED outputs, as you'd need to solder wires to the SMD LEDs.
