I don't think wrapping the rod in red film, or the other methods will substitute for a real acrylic rod. It looks like they took a clear and red rod, glued them together and hid the seam with the label. The screen used prop isn't the most polished of movie props out there, almost like they never intended it to get it's own closeup.
I bought some Acrylic Ruby Rod from Amazon 1/2 in x3' was $17, but shipped free with Amazon Prime. I looked around, found a few slightly cheaper, but the shipping was more. You may have a plastic supply shop near you, the closest one to me was a 2 Hr drive.
I bought a laser cutter, and this may be an early project for it!
