This is brilliant! I can't wait to see it done.
This is brilliant! I can't wait to see it done.
I'm headed over to Skruffy's house tonight, so I'll give him a prod to post some more stuff.
ETA: Especially because he has pics of mine to post, too!
...seriously....freaking excellent job in all..and the weathering looked TOP NOTCH!
cant wait to see the finals!!
Do you have molds?
I was wondering where you picked up that LED screen. I'm definitely interested in the Pip-Boy (and would honestly consider wearing it casually occasionally), but that screen has REALLY piqued my interest, because I'm working on three different projects that could all make use of it.
Hello Children! This is Three Dawg...
It is long past time for me to revisit this thread to bring you all some good updates.
My last post covered things being mostly done, it just needed a hinge and some other detail work done. Well, here's what it looks like now that it is complete:
Here's what it looks like in the dark. This was taken with a 1/2 second shutter delay to show off that beautiful post-apocalyptic glow:
Here's a close-up of the latch method. I thought about using velcro at first, then I found this wonderful stuff. It's a 3M product that works just like velcro, except that it is all plastic so it won't wear out over time like velcro does. It also doesn't flex like velcro and has a better resistance to lateral force than velcro. It works so well that after I showed this to one of my other Vault 101 buddies he went out and bought 4 boxes of the stuff to both re-do his Pip-Boy and for all his other projects where he was considering using velcro.
Here's how it looks when it's open and on my arm. You can see that I used 2 elastic straps to secure the bottom half and the top half swings open on the hinge to clamshell down. This also works really well for all the times I find myself opening it up to show people the electronics inside.
And here it is on my arm, closed:
Another look at the hinge. To attach this, I used my dremel to carve out a slot in the top of the PB3K that the hinge slides into. It took some very careful work because the tops of these are not super thick. But once I had my slot, I just dabbed in to 2 part epoxy and slid the hinge in. It works and fits beautifully.
And one last look down the barrel, now that it is complete:
Now the good news! I have an interest thread up in the Junkyard: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=84938
If there is sufficient interest, I will begin ordering the materials and parts and I can start production of these in limited batches starting in the next couple of weeks.
I want one...oh wait, I have one with the iTouch in it already. :0)
Must have one....
Rushes to junkyard
I've been reading this thread since it started and I must say your work is absolutely astonishing!
I might be interested in a casting, but can't post in the junkyard yet.
Just wondering if you could measure the dimensions in the empty slot meant for the screen?
Maybe I am able to use my android device inside of it..
Looking forward to the kit Scruff...erm...Three-Dog! Awooooooooooo!!!
As a serious fallout fan, that is epic!
I sunk like 150 hours into that game. You're giving me flashbacks. Excellent!
And, because I'd mentioned a long time ago that I was going to measure this, the interior circumference of the Pip-Boy is 9.25 inches in the back and 8.25 inches in the front/wrist area.
Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. This project was my most difficult undertaking to date and it feels so good to be done with it and to have the result not be a steaming pile of poo. There are a few things I wish worked better - foremost of which is that the audio occasionally cuts out because I have a less then stellar soldering connection for one of the volume knobs wires - so I may eventually build a second one, but overall I have been very pleased with how good this one has turned out.
SpankyMcJedi, sorry to induce the flashbacks! At least since the game is so awesome, they should be good ones!
Excellent work man. I never did finish playing through that game and I suddenly have the urge to do so...
If you are going to be making casts I'd definitely be interested.
Unreal...how did you get to that level
The work that was put into this is amazing , actually the whole forum has been bursting with really great work for the last few months, but this piece is really out of this world.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks, guys. I really appreciate the compliments!
That is seriously cool!
Thats truly amazing great job guy. Now you need to make a Brotherhood suit to go with it
As I am a slacker and do not yet have the count to post in the Junkyard, I will do so here!
Got my kit today Skruffy! Haven't laid it all out yet but from a cursory examination, I am very pleased. The casting is strong and clean, couldn't be happier. I am thinking about kitbashing a slim 3.5" digital photo frame for the screen instead. If it seems feasable I will post details. The frame in question is 14.99 at Frys, so if it works, it will be a cheap upgrade!
I don't have enough posts to post in the Junkyard either, so I will also do it here. I picked up my kit at the post office today. Very satisfied with the casting and the kit pieces. Looking forwards to working on this as I just finished my ANH Luke Lighsaber last night.
