Ghostbusters - Proton Pack (WIP)

New update incoming. I have cleaned up the support-shell and taken care of all the sharp edges:

Then the big moment was there...

One step closer to my own proton pack :)

During the weekend I ordered some gelcoat to get a smooth outer shell. The stuff was shipped today and should arrive during the week. In the meantime I started building the "ion arm". It is made out of 3mm plastic sheets and feels very durable already. Here are some impressions of the build:

At the moment the primer is drying. More soon...

Awesome. I've wanted one since the film came out but the cost of the kits has been too much for me. I'd love to have a try at building one. Nice work!!!

Today finally the gelcoat arrived. So I did not waste any time and went back to the project:

I had some problems making the coat stick to the silicone at first. It was too fluid but when the reaction kicked in and it started to turn thicker, I managed to make it stick to the vertical walls of the mold. Now I can only hope it will stay that way ^^

If anyone's interested: It took me about 0,3 gallons of gelcoat to fully coat the pack.

Next will be some fiberglas and epoxy-resin but first the gelcoat has to harden.

Thanks for watching! :)

Next step was fiberglassing the whole shell with several coats. This job is really the worst part. Everything sticks to everything - Except the one place it needs to stick to...

But in the end I think it was worth the efford:

Next will be trimming the edges and getting the release agent off the shell.

This is cool. I see a lot of builds where they make molds, but not a lot showing the steps - which honestly, I don't have a clue about.... So this has been cool to check in on.

Glad you like it! :)

This morning I trimmed off the excess fiberglass and gave the shell a rough sanding. This is what it looks like now:

I found some imperfections all around the shell due to some air bubbles between the gelcoat and the fiberglass. These will be filled up with bondo later. Stay tuned :)

Hey, nice to hear something from you... It's been a long time, sadly it's not much going on on Propschmiede...

Well done... But I'm pretty sure a finished shell is faster and better for the nerves of the builder, except you want to make more packs... But really nice.

Hey man, good to see you! You're right of course. Buying a shell is the easier way but I need at least 4 for myself and maybe some more if anyone else is interested. So going the hard way was the right way for me here ;)

cool project. Looking forward to see this finished. Are u planning to do more casts of it?

Doing more casts is definitely a goal but I will pull at least two more test-shells first, just to see which way works best. The idea that someone else might be interested in using one of my shells is very intriguing. It also makes me boost my personal level of quality :)

It is, indeed.:thumbsup Just think about it ... a accurate shell available here in germany, no customs at all,...I think this would be the first time ever. And an awesome project!
I would be one of your first customers:) I still need a pack for my thrower:

Man, that's a fine thrower you got there! Very impressive! :)

I hope my shell will meet your standards. I will keep you posted when I start the run!

BTW: There wa a guy from the German Ghostbusters Board, who made shells and sold them here in Germany, they were pretty acurate... So, you are the 2nd one, if you decide to make and sell shells...

Offtopic: You have a pretty impressive collection @ Andymac84 Don't know that you are Andyana on yourprops...

@ Epona: I think you will go with real parts to sinish the pack?
