I've been doing a lot of small scale and/or fine detail work lately. I thought it'd be fun to change gears and do something a little bigger, hence my attempt at Wall-E.

Progress so far is over three days.

Great job so far - looks great. Are you using the plans from the Yahoo builders site?

Nice,my girlfriend would love a wall-e,i've always said i'll try one day but well ....
My wife was the same. I was lucky enough to pick up one of the cardboard cinema display ones from Gumtree (like Craigslist) for $50. It even has a sensor that makes it say phrases and light up when you walk past! :)

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (MDF)

Looking good so far! Yeah I don't have the skills or time to work with wood like most Wall-e's are made with but I did snatch up one of those standee wall-e's too for my self, there are awesome too!

Subbed

Having been married to my former girlfriend for almost 20 years, my advice is to give it a go -it's a win/win ;)

Thank you. I'm absolutely pouring over all the content at the Yahoo builders site. Incredible detail and specifications make this a lot easier than some other projects.

I cannot begin to tell you how jealous I am. Very cool.

Thanks for subbing -and for the words of encouragement. The wonderful aspect of a build like this is that it has so much detail that individual pieces don't stand out -which masks a variety of "mishaps". So, don't sell yourself short -give it a go ;)

Looking Good keep up the good work
Thanks! Your build, along with Familyman's foam build, are two of my biggest inspirations.

I started working on the head/eyes today. This part seems to be the least documented on the Wall-E builders site so it's open to the most "artistic" interpretation. Consequently, this piece is taking a little longer than I was expecting. I'm hoping to make the eyes pose-able (change the angle off the center axis) so I'm still trying to figure out the pieces to make and how they fit together.

Here's current progress (everything is just dry fit)

I knew going into this project that Wall-E was roughly to the same scale as R2D2, but as the piece is materializing I'm blown away by how BIG this things going to be.

any plans on putting in a working motor? very cool
No plans to make it RC or motorized (that's a little out of my skill level at the moment).

Progress....

I had woefully assumed that the head would take a couple of days to make. Silly, silly, silly. I think I've way over-thought and over-engineered this piece, but it is starting to come together.

Painted, cleaned-up and dry fit the eyes

Thanks, I'm certainly interested in your thoughts.

I've sent a PM, but feel free to post your ideas on this thread. I'm sure other Wall-E builders could benefit from your ideas too.

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (MDF)

Well, the day has ticked past and Wall-E's head is far from complete -so much for my predictions. Some decent progress through.

All the brackets are cut and sanded.

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (MDF)

Great work, and very clean!
Thanks!

Permanently installed all brackets and added initial paint and weathering to all parts that will be visible once the covers are on the eyes (I'll do final airbrushing after Wall-E's fully assembled. This existing paint is all rattle cans.)

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (MDF)

The colouring of the rust looks good, but a bit flat. Are you going to add some texture into it? You could use modelling flock mixed with PVA and then painted orangey browns to get a convincing rust texture; I've used it before and it's good for life size props

That's a great idea. At this point I'm just laying in color before assembly so I'm not struggling to reach places once everything's together. Also, assembly is not going to great right now and Wall-E's taking a beating, so I'll be redoing a lot of the paint anyway.

I had assumed I'd get both eyes skinned in a day. Duh, 3 days and I've finally got one done (mostly). Lot's of glue and clamp failures and misalignment of the skin. Here's where the little guy sits for the day.

I also redid the top/front of the neck joint (I'd misinterpreted the plans). Hit it with a little paint while I was at it.

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (MDF)

Success! Well, at least progress ;)

Both eyes skinned and the "brows" added. I need to do a little more work on the eyebrows, but for now we're not too bad.

I need to get some distance from the head, so I'll move on to the back and arms.

Re: 1:1 Wall-E Build (MDF)

Started working on the bracing for the back panel.
9518511116_55a5d682ab_c.jpg

Although not even close to ready, I primed the sides and laid down some "fun paint". I'm playing with different weathering techniques and, of course, will hit it with a lot of brush detail and airbrushing once I'm in final assembly.

That said, I think Wall-E's starting to take on a little personality.
