Millennium Falcon Dejarik Holochess Build

I've been gone from here for a bit. But I've continued to build when I have the time. Here is an update of where it stands now.

Bottom Half Complete:
I did basically the same thing here as I did on the top. MDF, Styrene, Foam and Bondo.

Primed and Ready for a Mold:
This photo doesn't show the final top. It's still tucked away so that nothing can scratch it up. I'll place it on right before the mold process happens. I still have a few tiny little pin holes to deal with. But basically this is ready to go!

Final Keys Cast:
After I created a set of "junk" keys with my first mold, I was able to create the final mold to cast a row of 13. This was good for two reason TIME and PERFECTION (even though it's far from it, it helped them look similar).

Table Leg:
So I ended up going with a Concrete Form and a wood "shell". I'll paint the base and have a wrap printed for the tube. I tried a styrene skin but it just never looked right. This route was my first gut design. Seems to be the best route for me.

I ended up straying a little from the "real/original" movie version of the base. But I thought a stepped and tapper look would be cool.

A Builders Mark:
I've been noticing how popular these sort of little additions are in props. I thought...why not! I'll laser and engrave this one. No idea where I'll put it but probably not on the bottom. Maybe down around the bottom of the leg. I'd like it to be seen...a least a little. :)

LOVE your table. Looks amazing. I just wish someone would sculpt the remaining Dejarik playing pieces/aliens.

Thanks everyone. I'm with you Howlrunner, it would be pretty cool to have a few of them to display on the table once it's completed. Who knows, I might take stab at it one of these days. I do have access to a 3D printer.

Five of the 8 playing pieces have been offered in 1:1 in the past on the RPF. One member offered the Kintan Strider and Mantellian Savrip and a different member offered the K'lor'slug, Ghhhk and Houjix. That second member also sculpted the remaining 3 creatures, but sadly never got as far as casting/offering them.

These are the ones I picked up/painted:

This would be incredible to see. Hope you go for it to complete the set.

I started testing some paint effects on a few spare keys. I think for the actual table and leg I'm going for full on Automotive grade paint including a 2k matte clear coat to seal up the whole thing. Plus I hate cheap rattle can paint. I've just never had much luck with the stuff. It stays tacky or has all sorts of issues. It doesn't like me at all! I'm spending the extra money and going for the better stuff. After all this thing will be used as a table so it needs to hold up.

This test was done with a bulldog adhesion, black primer (two kinds for testing reasons), clear lacquer and Alclad aluminum. In that order sprayed over about a week.

Then the weathering in four different colors ranging from black to yellow.

This test is mostly this is about how "shinny" and/or "dirty" so I want to go. Every set of two keys has a little less dirt. The two black keys are a test of the two black primers I used. I wanted to see how long it takes them to cure.

I'm kind of thinking it might be cool to have the table painted in a different tone of metal. The top game board will be a "spun metal" look for sure. The round part might be night to go more deep. Then the keys could be a warm...almost brownish tone.

Very cool project ! I love it ! ! ! Just out of curiosity... what is the yellow stuff you applied on it, and why did you used this ?

Regards

I'm finally getting ready to finish this project. I'm literally down to the LEDs, switches/knobs and finish paint details (top). It takes me a while to get back on a project once I've burned myself out.

ANYWAY. I need some LED help. Anyone have any suggestions for places I could post my questions. I've purchased every thing I need. I just need to confirm some details about the wiring.

THANKS!

Man, I want one of these for the corner of my basement... someone needs to do a run of the table top...

*cough* hint *cough*

Blackbeardcrazy, the yellow stuff is Smooth-on 300. It's a 2 part product that I use to cast little parts. I needed something to coat the foam I didn't want to buy anything else. It worked out pretty well.

The biggest problem I had was how large this thing is. I'm used to dealing with small things. I almost bit off more than I could handle. :-\ But it turned out okay.

Neo and Sofa,

If I could figure out how to make casts of this thing I would totally do it. But it is SO big that my original attempt was almost a laughable failure. I managed to get the top MOSTLY done. But there was a TON of work to make it look good.

Honestly if I had to redo the project I would do it 100% differently. I learned SO much from this project. But hey if someone was ever will to create duplicates I might be willing to share the top. ;-)

I need to make those. I saw someone one time who made them. I should have jumped on a set back then. Some day maybe I'll get time to do it.

This thing will actually be used as a little meeting space in my office at work. So moving "toys" off the top all the time will be a pain. The next thing I'm doing is making some sort of seating. It won't be like the Falcon seating. More like a couple of stools that have the same look/feel. They have to small and ideally function as storage boxes.

My office at work is more like a closest. :) It's a Clo-ffice.
