Sorenzo's JUDGE DREDD HELMET CONTEST ENTRY

Always last to the party me :(

Only came across this comp at the end of last week, and only got started on my build a couple of days ago. It's gonna be tight, but I love a deadline me.

So i spent a while trying to decide on what to build, and finally settled with Judge Death
I'm not the biggest Dredd fan in the world, but I think JD looks fricken awesome, a extremely sinister character, right up my ally.

I had issues with the 'crispness' of his helmet though, everything about himis dead and decayed, the armour, the uniform, but his Helmet is always immaculate.
So I've decided to have a play around with the design, see if I can make it a little more bad ass. Definitely needs to be smashed up a bit, an evil ***ker is bound to have got himself in some nasty skirmishes.

Good luck! Make sure you take a few WIP shots. :)

As usual I will have a full WIP thread. Still got a bit to go, so I'm gonna crack on with the build before I get distracted with the internet. Will get pics up ASAP, Hopefully later today whilst I'm waiting for paint to dry.

Right, still on track for the deadline. Here is some of the progress to date.

Started off with a standard cycling helmet.

Took the straps and most of the padding out then set about sealing up the holes. Pieces of styrene fixed with plastic cement works well. The top can then easily be filled with bondo.

I attached a thin piece of styrene to the outside of the helmet, then cut along the edge. This left me with a template that I used to cut a new piece from a thicker material. Note the holes on top were also filled and sanded.

A layer of Gelcoat with some fine glass paper was applied to add strenght.

Bondo, bondo, bondo, sand, sand, sand, prime, prime, prime. . .

So for the visor/grate I sampled some foamex to test the material. I wanterd it to look completely aged and distorted, not all crisp and clean like it is in soo much of the artwork. The Foamex worked great, it is completely pliable when heated, and with enough heat it distorts the edges, which was perfect for the battered and decay look i'm going for.

First grate I made from 6mm material, it worked well, heating and bending, but it was a little on the thick side.

I made another version with 3mm material, worked much better. I chipped away at the edges, then blasted each piece with the heat gun and after a hour or so I ended up with this. . .

I decided to add a bit of relief to the edges, mostly to make it easier to paint the second colour. 0.5mm stryrene works a treat, again bonded straight onto the primed surface using plastic cement.

Couple of layer of black paint. had a happy accident whilst doing this. one of my cans developed a problem with the nozzle whilst spraying cause it to spit. The texture effect it left looked amazing, so i continued :D

Oh, you can kind see from the picture above, I went crazy with a saw and a chisel and took chunks out of the helmet, why paint on damage when you can actually damage it!!!

My lid is just about complete. Finishing touches tomorrow then I'll update this thread, but now I need some sleep.:sleep:sleep:sleep

A little bit more of my progress.

Masked off the outer trim and painted. I went with a more Black and Silver look (like in the picture above) I'm not really a fan of the Blue and Red look.

Started weathering the edges and cracks, a nice grimey, grey/brown/purple pimpled into all the recesses.

8642976974_2058fe5923_z.jpg

Sprayed up a load of plastic dome top rivets, not sure what these are for, or from, just found them lying around. waste not, want not.

8641878729_4f038f554f_z.jpg

Drilled and fixed them to the grate. Looking pretty bad ass now!!

8642978792_d44dacd2a9_z.jpg

A bit of weathering, both with the scapel and the paint brush.

Home straight!

Weathering, lots of weathering.

I created a visor for the grate section. I spray a sheet of acetate with Niteshade, works a treat.

8643826704_cc4053719d_z.jpg

Fixed the grate in place with some screws, covered the head over with the plastic rivets.

8642731485_8a91b52129_z.jpg

And last but not least, i used the pattern from earlier in the build to cut out some nice foam lining for the inside of the Helmet.

And we're done :D

That smile just insn't sinister enough though. . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . there was NO WAY I could ever dream about doing a Judge Death lid without having that phenomenal mouthful of teeth below the grate!!

So I've done a sculpt too :D

I did a small sample earlier in the week to test the theory. Once I saw the results I knew I had to do it!

8642770129_9ccdcdfaf3_z.jpg

I used the polystyrene head as my base and clayed up around it. I had already sawn off the nose and mouth and I used tooth pics to mark off the heights for the teeth.

8643870546_58b125f4cf_z.jpg

Next up I need to create the teeth, 20 in all, and each one unique (I like making a lot of work for myself) 20 uniformed pieces of white opaque acrylic where individually sanded down to the basic tooth shape. I then finished each one with the dremel, scoring in chips and marks.

8642776605_c949c93b82_z.jpg

Needless to say, I still have no skin on my knuckles or my finger tips :(

I blacked each tooth, then sanded back, leaving the paint in the recesses. I worked my way back to a 1200 wet paper to give them a high polish finish.

Then it was on to the sculpt. I don't have any progress shots, but I did a time lapse of the entire process. hopefully will be able to get that video up later next week.

Discovered a happy accident. The clay shrank considerably whilst drying, which caused the back of the head to crack. I would have been upset if this had been any other sculpt, but as it was Judge Death, I think it only added to the piece! LOOKS FRICKEN BADASS!!

So that's may piece complete. I think I clocked over 100+ hours since sunday, but it was well worth it. But before I went for Friday beers, one last job. . . .
PHOTOSHOOT!!!

8642789883_3d7f3852b7_z.jpg

Ive got a lot of ideas of pictures I want to take, but we didn't have the longest time to do the photo shoot (beers were getting warm) but we could not resist playing with fire briefly :D
