Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I actually don't care what planet/s it takes place on so long as J.J. and Kasdan have the script and story to back it up.

I can look past nearly anything so long as it has a solid story to make it come to life, like the OT.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Just because it's a desert location doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be Tatooine. It could be Geonosis or Korriban or Jar Jar'ia or whatever. Let's not get too nervous just yet. Although I could care less either way.

I think there would be some nice symmetry returning to Tatooine. Lucas clearly was a big fan of that idea, returning to places, themes, ect., and that informs the 6 films the precede this. It's not an unreasonable assumption to think JJ would want to continue that symmetry in 7, 8, , and I think that is the correct creative instinct. These films are not stand alone, that are part of a 9 film series.

What I was thinking :behave

Same here...

However, if Luke took off on his own as a lot of people seem to believe will have happened - i can see him returning there. Whole lotta nothing there. Easy to find quiet space where no one will bother you.

You have a point, also since Luke was raised there I suppose that'd be one place he returns to as he's most comfortable (no matter how much he said he hated it there at first) be kinda neat if they find him living in Kenobi's old place.

I also wonder if there was an intent to make the planet more important....

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

We all want a "vintage Star Wars" buzz and this series could actually deliver it. So let them go back to Tatooine. Big deal. There could be lots of possible plot reasons for it.

Maybe it's a sh*thole of a planet but it's centrally located, or there is something else important nearby, or it's along a route between somethings, etc. Luke's annoyed comment in ANH about how Tatooine was in the middle of nowhere could have been an exaggeration.

There is certainly enough to support that idea based on the first 6 movies. Various characters kept ending up there while traveling. And Mos Eisley spaceport always seemed like a pretty hot spot for a planet that was truly in the middle of nowhere.

My concern is less about returning than about rehashing. It's a fine line to walk, to be sure, but it strikes me that there's a whole galaxy out there to explore, and continually returning to Tatooine (or Hoth, or Yavin, or Bespin) kind of makes it feel like a bottle universe. Tatooine is supposed to be some backwater that nobody visits unless they have no choice. Jabba's there, so you have a crime presence, but other than that, people aren't really supposed to have a reason to be there. Or at least, that was the case before the defeat of the Empire. I don't think it's widely known that Anakin was from Tatooine (let alone Vader). What I could see being the case is that Luke's fame has led people to focus on Tatooine...but it still doesn't quite explain why there'd be a wrecked AT-AT there.

Anyway, I'd just like to see a properly grand-scale film, rather than one that's myopic. I've been watching the Clone Wars cartoon, and enjoying the expanse of the galaxy that you get to see in it. While I can see having maybe a scene or two on Tatooine, I'd prefer them to focus elsewhere and move forward. They need to connect the new films with the old, certainly, but I worry that the film will devolve into "Remember this?! We recreated it!!" along with a bunch of references to past glories. Hopefully that's just me being overly cautious.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Understood, but I think the entire "it's a big universe" idea is informed more by the EU and more recently the CW then the films. The films focus is on characters who, like many people, tend to revisit places which hold meaning for them.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Right, but that's also part of the issue. If we're dealing with new characters, why would they necessarily be going to these old places, ya know? It may end up making perfect sense in the story, but I worry about forcing in the familiar for the sake of making sure the familiar appears. Like, having a character make a cameo just to be able to check a box next to their name and say "Right, so, that's [character] taken care of...who's next?"

Basically, I worry about the appearance of the familiar coming at the expense of the story, rather than being an organic outgrowth of it.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

New characters for sure although it sounds like there will also be many old characters and possibly their extended family included.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

For all we know they could be intending to CGI those sand dunes to look purple.

But honestly, I would be surprised if the first new SW movie doesn't spend any time on Tatooine.

Especially considering if Luke is actually in this movie.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Who knows Tatooine might be in the film for 2 minutes, never to be seen again :unsure

and what about Obi-Wan's in The Phantom Menace: Here, Master. Tatooine. It's small, out of the way, poor... ;)

key crew are being hired on long term contracts. It wouldnt pay to divulge any information and frankly, there isnt a need to do so. People have posted in this thread that know more than they can say and ive said it on the RPF before, JJ is a member.
