New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

I'm not sure whats considered canon and what isn't

I'm sure that there are other positions on this but for me it's just the TV show. The only thing that comes close to Canon that wasn't part of the series is the TV movie but even then, the Doctor isn't half human so it technically isn't (amongst other huge issues).

Still though, I'll have to read the book anyway.

Oddly enough...while on the subject of canon...this was addressed in the 10th Doctor comic series "The Forgotten", that has been confirmed by the BBC as canon. The Doctor makes a comment about his abilities & says, "Iwas even able to fool my greatest enemy into believing I was part human with a half-broken Chameleon Arch & a wide eyed grin."

Neat bit of retcon that satisfies me.

Ah... Now THERE is a sigh of relief.

There ya go. TV Movie can be canon now. :lol

I've barely touched the Big Finish audios, but they are all considered canon. I have listened to all 3 seasons of 8th Doc audio adventures and I love them. Never thought I could get so into them but they are perfect for a one hour run. They've really given me a good idea of his time as the doc.

Anyone else totally stoked for tomorrow's episode??? I'm hoping for greatness. :D

TOTALLY stoked! I'm hoping to see the Weeping Angels actually weep again. I'm also desperately trying to wrap up my 1:1 Angel statue in time for Haloween. So hopefully this will spur me on a bit!

I don't have high hopes for the weeping angels episode tonight. After watching the trailer........
Spoiler if you havent seen the trailer.

Staue of Liberty being a giant angel. I preffer the normal size ones, Kinda reminded me to much of GB 2. I do however like the look of the little cherubs.

I am also concerned that the angels are getting to much air time. They will soon loose their apeal much like the daleks.

*Spoilers*

Yeah, the Angels really need to be put to rest as they broke nearly every rule we saw in the original episode. They can clearly see each other, people don't bother to keep looking at them, and they are incredibly fast except when it's in the way of the plot. The blink and they move effect is mostly lost by now.

The Statue was a nice idea, but they did nothing with it.

I think the worst bit of all is that I didn't really care for the Ponds most of the episode. The Doctor was lethargic, River was her usual bubbly, domineering and obnoxious self but little else. It was nothing near the quality of the Pandorica episodes.

This episode had tons of great ideas, but it never used most of them properly.

not really a good episode, ive got to say.
it was obvious from the beginning what would happen, they just ignored all their own rules, and the statue of liberty being an angel was just stupid, seeing that it did absolutely nothing. you hear it walking, and then it just stands there. rory comes to the roof and looks off the roof with the statue standing behind him, but apparently it didnt care.

over all really weak.

FULL of holes in the Weeping Angels "rules" as well as a few other things but believe it or not I think this episode wasn't that bad. Certainly it had some emotion to it. Here on in be spoilers and I'm not using tags ('cause the title of the thread says spoilers) so if you haven't seen it this is your warning. ;)

First what didn't work:

I think by virtue of some of their talk in this episode that they're done with New York for a while which is good. For some reason in Doctor Who everyone in NYC speaks like a gumshoe and it gets really annoying really quick. Even though it really was just the first little bit it got on my nerves right away.

The Statue of Liberty thing was dumb. Really dumb. It didn't add anything to the plot and for me the biggest problem is that until now all Angels have been stone... The Statue of Liberty ISN'T STONE!

River. My distaste for this character is well known. All the campy marriage jokes really started to wear.

"Marriage changes the future". No it doesn't. What a dumb line.

Obviously the rules were played around with in regards to the Angels. In my mind I kept thinking that they were REALLY slow for angels that could get you if you blinked! Not to mention they were looking at each other all the time.

HOWEVER! Things that worked:

The ending was sad but not too sad. This is REALLY the type of departure we needed from the Ponds and I'm glad they did it this way. In the current timeline Amy & Rory are dead. Not trapped somewhere, not forgetful, DEAD. Not only this but Amy's womb was not repaired as I feared they might do. That said there's still the reassuring notion that Amy & Rory were able to live out their lives together.

River. I know she was in my bad list but she wasn't awful in this episode. She has a bit of a Martha complex which helps me to appreciate the relationship more. Also, when piloting the TARDIS I distinctly listened for and heard the proper noise that every TARDIS has made since the start of the series. Parking brake my ass! :p In my mind this means it's possible she was just teasing him before and helps me ignore that dumb ass line.

The Angels were scary. I had a feeling they might not be but my kids were scared and i thought that despite their lack of consistency they played their role well.

There was genuine emotion. When Rory was trying to get Amy to push him it really worked. It didn't seem as contrived as previous "emotional" moments between them.

Anyhow, didn't mean to write a novel. :) Not a bad entry and certainly better than last week's episode. Just bummed there's no more until Christmas (HATE this new way of doing the seasons. :angry

I thought the episode was the best of the season...if not the best in a while. The departure of the Williams's (as noted on the headstone) was a good one...not some sappy, gentle "drop them off at home" crap as has been done in the past, or being trapped in a parallel universe, only to return here and there.

And the Angels...scariest "enemy/villain" in the show, IMO. But I thought the same about the Statue of Liberty. I thought it would be cool to have that as an angel when they first showed it in the episode, then thought to myself "it isn't stone, so they won't do that." Oh well. :rolleyes

This has been the fastest 5 weeks of my life.

I think the BBC folks have been watching too much USA network. That's how they do ALL their shows. Half now, half 6 months later. Plus is side is only 4.5 months between new eps. Down side is only 6 week runs...

I have to say I liked it but I did notice the holes in the angel rules.

I think it's interesting that they put age on that tombstone and not dates. I guess it's hard to explain 1985-1934, or whatever the year was :) They would have had to have left instructions after their deaths so that the undertaker only used ages, otherwise the second one would have dated the stone the year of their death making it easier to find them. Had to be a personal choice.

I had speculated on that end earlier actually. If the doctor has no time frame on where they went, he can't find them. However, he'd have enough of a window that i'd imagine he could find them pretty damned fast. Tombstone in NYC. Gives him a window of NYC between around 1750-2012. Just checking NYC for them on a yearly basis, he'd find them inside a year. I didn't catch a rule that said he couldn't bring them back, just that he said he couldn't see them again after seeing only an age on the stone. So, unless i missed something, they can always bring them back if they choose.

I kept feeling like there were details that I was missing and I'm going to have to go back and watch the episode again to see what might have been shown or said that I didn't catch the first time through.

Thoughts:

-Statue of Liberty = stupid
-Angel rules were completely ignored
-Are we ever going to see how Brian is told or reacts to the news that his son and his daughter in law are never coming home and dead when he JUST said he trusted the Doctor with them and their lives.
-But overall a strong episode for me and a decent sendoff for the Ponds (Though Amelia is now using "Williams")

Random thought:

-When the Doctor checked his hair and eyebrows in the TARDIS, the piece of brass he was looking at was some sort of Rolls Royce placard, like you might find in an old-timey car or engine, indicating the number of services its had. Weird, especially since they seemed to make a point of racking the focus so you could clearly read it.

-Who is going to be the first person to replicate that novel and/or the last page?

-Nick

yeah i hate that too.

funny thing for me this ep was this guy:

I thought the last scene was going to be him knocking on a door and Brian opening it. We don't have to see the explanation - just know it occurred. Could be where the xmas episode picks up.

Good question about the plaquard. If you're right about it being old, could be him trying to find them. He's got a pretty refined window to search.
