Warhammer 40000 Space Marines

Progress Update. Smoothing in progress, some minor symmetry still needs to be worked out.

I decided to add these little vents to the back, but I'm not too sure if I like them or not:

I don't recall them on the helmet.

The old plastic miniatures didn't have much in the way of detail to them, so I was taking some license with the design. Looking at the back of the helmet and decided it needed to be a little more interesting. In the end I'm going to remove them and just make it smooth like the miniatures. I'm also not sculpting out the vents on the cheeks. Instead I'll cut the vents out of the final casting. That will keep the skin thick around the holes.

So it's been a long time since I've updated this thread on my progress. I finished the sculpt over the past week:

It's a little on the small side, but I think it will look the part once I've finished sculpting all of the rest of the armor:

So with the sculpture complete it was time to move on to the blue sticky goo phase:

I'll be building a mothermold today and I should be able to make my first pulls from the mold after I pick up some more casting resin tomorrow.

With all of the expense that's gone into the making of just this one part (not to mention the time and so forth) I'd be amazed if anyone can generate one of these suits for less than $1,000. Bear in mind that a suit of plain stormtrooper armor that is comparatively easy to make and cheap to reproduce will still cost between $400 and $800 depending on where you get it from. I'm making this by rotocasting resin and it will be a much more elaborate and expensive process than the vac-formed styrene white armor. This means no seams or velcro, but it also means each unit will be rather expensive.

Beautiful sculpt. I am thinking of starting one, but going with a more detailed helmet. The one with the nose and mouth as a vent.

There should be vents in the cheeks i believe - ?

I left the vents out because there are a wide variety of different placements for the vents. Leaving them out makes it so I can cut them out of the final casting . This way I don't have to worry about forcing the resin into the narrow areas between the vents, and whoever finishes the helmet casting can place the vents wherever they want.

I'm actually planning on doing that one as well. The guys that I'm working on this project with prefer the radiator face. When this sculpt comes out of the mold I'm going to modify it like crazy and make the grill. Either that or the skull-shaped chaplain variant.

I started making a mark 8/7 whichever it is. the one without the cone bit. i made the vent part at the front anyway. lol

Though I am not a fan of Smurfs, especially the beakies, I cannot deny the quality. It looks awesome. I can't wait to see a completed helmet. I would almost consider one with the grill mouth, if anything as a war trophy.

For the Greater Good..

Very nice sculpt. A friend of mine is in the process of making molds for a full MK8 suit. He's got most of them done and will hopefully be doing some test pulls in the next month or so.

thorssoli thats an amazing sculpt. It looks like its a good comprimise in terms of scale.

I think for a space marine costume to succeed the scale needs to be kept undercontrol. I cant really think of a reason not to scale the whole costume down slightly in proportion.

Anywho nice job. Lets see some kits come out of that mold.

i think the stick goo refers to the silicone for the mold. ;)

Thorssoli,

newbie here. Pardon me for being ignorant. What's the purpose of the 'sticky goo'?
