Well first off, thanks to Dung0beetle, for the Pep file of the small chin IM helmet. I don't have the know how to do the 3-D building process. I wish that he would return soon with his talent, here is what I have so far.

Any comments are welcomed,

Sorry if the pics are too big, I am not sure what size they should be

Re: The beginning of my Ironman costume

Very nice work there, a great start.

Question, what exactly is the transparent material your using there for the light ring?

Re: The beginning of my Ironman costume

nice! how do you bend it like that into a circular shape? and does it stay?
A heat gun, going back and forth. Not too close to the rod, once a section is hot enough you can bend it. For the size I did, I used a 3" pvc pipe to shape it to. You can bevel the ends so that when you bend it around the ends line up. I didn't because that is where I will be placing the LED's and covering it with a conductor coil.

Since I've seen some great work done in foam, I figured I would attempt to try my hand at it as well... here goes. Oh and there are some updates on the Arc Reactor also....

Nice work so far. How do plan on smoothing the foam so that the texture doesn't show because I'm thinking of using foam to create a set of Jedi armor like Ani & Obi-Wan wear in the Clone Wars animated series but I'm reluctant to use the floor/puzzle mat foam because of the texture and I think that it might be too thick too.

yep pretty sweet dude. did my arc very similar, thats it in my profile pic. what book is that you got there? is it a movie accurate book or like a comic version? looks like a good source :)

Thanks for all the comments. First off I got the idea for using the foam from Trek920 who is doing a Gears of War armor http://www.therpf.com/f24/gears-war-v-1-out-foam-tb-21-a-92492/ and Evil FX who is doing Mass Effect 2 Armorhttp://www.therpf.com/f24/mass-effect-2-n7-armor-builds-89795/
Thanks to these guys for putting the idea in my head!

To answer the beveling and smoothing questions, I used a dremel and hand power with sand paper.

Riceball: you can sand it down to any thickness. Also the floor tiles are only for the chest everything else will be done using Minicel LS-200 foam. They have different thickness and come in sheets of up to 72" x 48".

brimst0ne13: I have Styrene, similar to Sintra. I will use this on some parts of the build such as the arc reactors center rings and for the walls for the coil wraps.

Starktech: The book is called The Art of Ironman 2. Great book for reference.

More to come once my order for the minicel gets here...

Do the power tools not heat it up and melt it?

Also, and on the same topic, are you using the power tools to do the bulk of the work, and then sanding it smooth? Or does the sandpaper take down enough of it that you can essentially sculpt it with the sandpaper?

The dremel doesn't heat up the EVA foam, it is rated up to 250 degrees. So no worries there. I use the dremel and solder gun to do detailing lines and sanding the majority of the shape, then hand sand the finer parts. A heat gun will be used to help shape the forms

I will be watching this with great anticipation with all the problems I have been having with my foam build!!

What are your plans for coating? Plasti-Dip?

Very impressive so far. I have a feeling the next 6 months is going to see a huge uptick in the use of these foam floor mats, becuase so far every project i've seen them used in has been a smashing success.

Keep it up dude!
