Been wanting an excuse to get back into projects and this outfit tickled my fancy so off to Tandy Leather I went. $150.00 later and I had most of the supplies to get started.
hoping to do this version without his huge awesome coat.

I was able to source his vest clasps but only in brass so I will have to give them a quick blast of paint

Had a small snapfu with my piping as I bought 12mm cord but did not have enough, upon return to the store they were out, had to scrap and get 9mm cord instead.

Ive got ~ 2 weeks to get this project done for a local ren faire , still on the list to figure out is the conchos on his belt, shoulders and as-well as his belt buckle. If anyone has any leads I would be greatly appreciative :)

sorry about my crappy phone pics, updates to follow as I make progress.

That's looking awesome! I want to make this costume some day, where did you find the clasps?

Edit: did some digging looks like they are produced by JHB international
Labeled Trivet clasps

Looking at about 6 pairs to be accurate, Im going with only 4 pairs since they are what you mostly see visible

Found them on etsy and ebay
keywords are either going to be Celtic clasps or Ive found them under Spanish clasps

FWIW, the pants were originally made by Danier, but they were discontinued. OUAT completely bought them out, and have to have the custom made now.

Thanks for the info! I probably won't get to the pants for the faire but I hope to use this costume as my evening chill out costume for Dcon, so I'll probably attack the pants for that. They look to be a split of either leather/waxed denim or leather/suede.

Denim, I've worn them.

Also, you can see in these pictures that the clasps on his vest look gold

Dude thanks for the better pics, your totally right maybe I'll just keep them in brass then.
zeppo did you double or work on the show?

did some digging on the buckle has to be a rope edged heel buckle in what I assume is a 2 inch belt that's shaved down to 1 ish on the ends. The buckle design is worn but looks to be floral of some sort. Still no luck figuring out those metal pieces holding the laces on the belt are.

That is definitely possible. I get the vibe from those 3 photos that they may just be reflecting warm colors around them, though. The first picture in this thread certainly doesn't look like it's been retouched to make them look like white metal, and why would they anyways?

To be clear, you're saying the pants are leather and denim?

And Josh, I feel like I might have seen that buckle before, I'll have a look at some of the sites in my bookmarks and see if I can spot it. As for the metal plates, I'm not sure where to get them, but you could probably have some acrylic laser cut and glue domes to the front, then paint them. Ideally, get one done that way, then mold and cold cast. That's a little time consuming, though.

Oh, and it looks like his sword is Jack Sparrow's sword.

Yes, the pants are leather and denim. They're the "go to" pants on the show. Jefferson, the Hatter, wears them as well. I wore them when I doubled Michael Adamthwaite's character in this scene:

I would say that they're the original brass ones. To get that kind of a gold glow off of them (if they were silver) you'd pretty much be having to shine a gold light directly on them. If they were reflecting something gold coloured nearby, they'd have to have a pretty polished finish. Whereas in the promo photo above, a white light directly on them could make them look silver in a photograph, and those gallery shoots use pretty bright, white lights. Look at the brass pieces on his shoulders. The ones on his left shoulder are obviously brass, but the ones on his right look silver, due to the way the light is hitting them.

Joshspiderman - yeah, I work on it occasionally. If you saw the season finale, when Hook and Emma look into the mirror, that's me staring back.

OMG that is so awesome you work on the show!

Looking more at pics the more I believe the color is indeed brass heres another one that someone snapped that doesnt looked touched and you can see the color difference from clasps and the buckle

appreciate the assistance Risu.
I Feel like Ive seen that belt hardware before but I cant recall where
Today Ill spend my work hours scouring the net to source stuff then I can go home and work more on that piping.

Although I wont be rocking his coat did anybody see that Hook coat that south beach leather produces?

From what I remember, South Beach Leather turn out complete garbage and/or steal your money.

Yea, brass for sure.

The thing that's always interested me in the Hook costume is the chevron pattern cuffs and collar. I've never been able to tell if it's embossed leather, embroidered leather, or some kind of quilted polyester.

Joshspiderman - I only work on it occasionally.

Not to derail anything, but here's some friends and I at a con a couple of years ago as OUAT characters
FanExpoOUAT.jpg

Its not derailment its OUAT :)

Yeah I think the hatters coat was embossed leather while killians was a quilted poly or just fabric, the design looks to run on the whole inside of the coat

You can see that same design all the way up.

also what do you guys think on boots, Im half tempted to do pointed dress boots and make some boots covers like hes rocking in the show.

still had no luck on the buckle

Just found these on pants, a lil close but no cigar, best to custom make them I think

If you were going to wear the coat and cover up the back, I think those pants would work, but without the coat the jeans details would be very obvious.

Most likely the chevron fabric is only a front facing. It's too heavy to line the coat, if that's what you meant. I was unsure before about it maybe being a striated lambskin, but it definitely does look like poly. Maybe a comforter that they cut up?

Seeing that last shot, it's clear his boots were spats. Knowing that makes things way easier. I'll probably use my Matt Smith Doctor Who boots as the base for my own pair, they look almost exactly like that.

The base shoe of his boots are either these:
Fluevog Shoes - Item detail: Garric
Or these:
Fluevog Shoes - Item detail: Cooper

My guess is that they're the second pair - as they don't have the stitching on the top. OUAT does love their Fluevogs.

The uppers are a pair of equestrian half chaps, though they look to have been modified - ie: the top fold over flap.

Re: the Hatter's coat. Yes, the collar, cuffs, lapels and pocket flaps are all embossed leather. I got the identical stuff from the same shop that OUAT buys their leather from. Same coat fabric as well (from the same shop in Vancouver). No idea if they bought the fabric from Hook's coat locally or not. They buy a lot of stuff from Fabricana in the Vancouver area. My friend who dressed as Red is wearing the identical fabric in her bodice as was used on the show.

Funny story, when I showed Eduardo Castro that picture, he initially thought I was Hook :p

Wow, those Fluevog shoes are ugly. I think you're spot on though with the Cooper ID. I'll stick to my shoes though. His are pretty broken in and the toe has flattened a bit anyway.

Im in love with those shoes!!

Thank you both for chiming into the thread, I really appreciate the knowledge,
I think those shoes will be my july bday present.
for boot covers It might be cool to do my own with eyelets in the back so I can thread the back, would meld with the vest nicely I think.

Josh, good luck on the project.

Zeppo, thanks for your insights.
