Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
the 8 second render took an entire night to render (at something like 450x350 pixels, and only 15 frames a second...) with Vray for sketchup.
Last night, I just set my computer up to render the whole walkthrough of the interior (minus the cockpit and turrets, which I'm going to have to render separately and splice in, due to geometry complexity/memory shortage), this time with a larger resolution and at 30 frames a second. This could take a really long time... Stormy, not sure why the link wouldn't work. Try it again, if it still won't redirect right, I'll pm you a solution of some kind. |

Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
heh, Shaunsheep, you always bump right when I've been feeling guilty about being away from the project for too long.
here's my second vray test. looking a lot better, though still rough around the edges. Had to omit the cockpit because sketchup+vray couldn't handle it, BUT I just got a copy of rhino with vray, and that should be able to do what I need.... as soon as I figure out how to use it. enjoy! Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
The hard turns of the camera are the only thing that make it look like anything but a steady cam walk through. The lighting is spot on. You keep getting closer to real life with each step.

Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
the hard turns are unavoidable in sketchup, but rhino's camera moves are much, much smoother.
Thanks for the compliment! just wait till I add the dirt... |

No need to apologize, your free bump has put me back on track.
though I may blame you later for the increasing frustration of not knowing what I'm doing in Rhino, just fair warning. heh. |

Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
hey folks,
no new work on the animation, but that's because I've been rebuilding the main hold. hence there being no hallway and also the lack of detail on the crash couch (which I'm also rebuilding). Rinzler had to go and publish that damn book, so I've been rebuilding again and again as I obtain new blueprints.... enjoy! and happy new year, if I hadn't already said it.

Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
Hey folks. I've been putting off detailing the greebled recesses of the main hold's wall for quite some time now. Almost all the reference is either very murky or very low resolution. I could have compromised in some areas and used ESB references, but I'm glad I didn't. After all this time, the back wall is actually starting to come together, and, with just a few more details, it may actually be complete!

This is such a wonderful thread!
Terrific stuff! I can't believe all the work and research you have put into this thing Thanks I hope when it's further along you can do a small animatic of a fly-threw What 3D software are you using to create this?

Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
with a few more details in place, I may be ready for a new flythrough fairly soon. I've been holding off because a rendered video, even at a small resolution, will take up quite a bit of time, and keep my computer pretty much otherwise non-functional. At the very least, though, I'll need to test out how I'm going to export the model from Sketchup (where I do all the construction) into Rhino with Vray (where I'm making the fly-through), and make it all turn out smoothly.
Thanks for the compliments! I've left a few updates of the above, with even more detail, rendering while I'm at work. I'm going to try to post those tonight. Stay tuned! |

Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
Yeah, you really need a dedicated render machine to do any reasonable amount of animation. Rendering it overnight is another option, although I personally like to keep an eye on animation while it's rendering just incase something needs fixing.
Can you do network rendering with your workflow? I'm not familiar with the software you're using, so I'm not sure if it's designed for it. Looking really good so far btw. I'd love to see it all textured up and done.

Re: Screen Accurate Millennium Falcon Cockpit (CG Model)
Just awesome. The whole atmosphere of the place is so convincing, that not only do I forget that it's rendered in ones and zeros, and therefore not real, but I want to make a sandwich and just sit down and chill out there.
Just too awesome. |
