I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build- Aztec painting videos!!

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

Orb, you are insane! I have been working on a single 1/350 since 2010. I am amazed that you would tackle two at the same time. I look forward to following you builds.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

you should join the models, create some kind of refit hydra

I can see it now, a huge 2 headed/saucered beast on 4 nacelles, with torpedo launchers for eyes:D

Thanks, your 1/350 is looking really good! I peeped in on it at work earlier today. A 1/350 is a pretty hard core build. Liked what you said about thinking your half way done & realizing you not even close. That pretty much sums it up! These will be builds 2 & 3 for me, & I can remember on the 1st saying only 2 more weeks about 5 times:facepalm

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

Practice up..........you'll be building me one some day :thumbsup

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

Great photos! I'm enjoying them and one day I'll build my refit kit.
Like most, I'm intimidated by the lighting and paint job (still uncertain about aztek decals).

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

You really ARE a glutton for punishment! I'm nearly done with my first refit, and I have to say that was the biggest single project I think I've ever done! I like what I see so far, though.

Coming along nicely.

I see I'm not the only one to cut out the water ways in the arboretum.
Are you planning to bottom light it?

Thanks, don't stress about the scope of the build. Just take it one section at a time.
If it makes you feel better, I was so freaked out by the large decal sheets that I wound up making paint masks for the aztec & strong back details!

Some days I let the insane half of my brain make decisions & this is what it gets me.

It's the only way to go, water has depth & needs to look that way.
I wont be specifically lighting the water, but I do put leds along the bottom of the hull for extra light to the lower windows. That should give the pool some nice spill over light.
On the first build I tried lighting the pool & found it was a good idea to put .020 white styrene across the pools bottom for diffusion & toning down the light. Gave it just enough glow to bring out the blue, but not look like it had a pool light.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

Yep...same question...how do you frost the clear bits and do you do both sides?

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

Whenever I 'frost' my clear elements i just use a very fine grade sandpaper and only ever do the smooth inside, it always seems to do the job.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

So you don't want to share your method? I imagine you may be sand blasting or something lol.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

$95.00 for some simple metal work!!!! wow!!! if you guys want i can figure out this on my own, would only cost the price of supplies and shipping. just throwing that out there

edited in, if some one did the leg work on the measurements that is. :)

I've purchased and installed the S.I.D. on my refit Enterprise and it works well. If my pesky housecats determination to knock everything unguarded to the ground be any indication.
Now as to it being "simple metal work"; I have to take issue with that statement. The S.I.D. has been precision made to fit inside the model darned near exactly the way it was advertised. About the only problem was- the starboard warp pylon support was slightly out of true- fixed easily enough with some sweat.

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

Put the part in a bag of sand and shake it?

LoL, No, but I like the idea!

Ok, ok... Thanks for the interest, but please keep in mind that this is what I do for a living & some of these are trade secrets. Most of the time I will give hints to lead you in a direction.
This time I'll give it. Bradicus was correct, SANDBLASTER!

Re: I AM A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT!! - Dual 1/350 Refit build

Nice. I figured you used a sandblaster. I have access to a sandblaster also in my line of work and I use it to frost clear parts. Yours had that look.

It's the only way to get that true frosted look with proper light diffusion.
Matte coats get it close & it looks kind of frosted, but the parts still never get good light diffusion.
Sandpaper might leave circles & lines that can be really visible when light shines through the part. This can be avoided by wet sanding with 800-1200 grit wet/dry paper. It does take some time to get the frosting even & it will never get into the nooks of small parts.
Most of the time I will frost both sides, especially if it's being painted for light blocking. Here's where sandblasting really wins out. It gives the surface a "tooth" for paint to grab on & flow evenly across.
If I want a window glass look with an even glow behind, just the back will be frosted.
Here's a good example:
These should look familiar as the impulse crystal, & part 256 E-hull windows.
Since the impulse crystal will have a painted frame & I want an super even glow both sides were frosted.
On the window I still want the glossy "glass" look, so just the back was frosted.
