Thanks for coming by was great meeting you Guy, maybe next
time it will be a bit warmer out! I don't know about genius though.....
that's really stretching it....:lol I am going to start on the A-wing again
maybe after the slave. I want to make new parts for it like i was telling you about, hoped to start on the new hulls but had a mix up with shipping.

Another amazing build of Micael-3D!!
Thanks Katsu!

You are a sick puppy Michael...
Thanks......:lol

Well a little work on the front skirt....

Re: Slave-1

I cut into the plastic just enough to recess it a little bit,
then filled back over it with the UC-30 Still ended
up with the cross sections showing....Oh well! I would
rather sand them out of styrene then go back up on
the pattern and kill myself!:wacko
001-5.jpg

Then star of today's show arrives in the kitchen.....I pushed the buck
back on the platen, so the end with the big drop would have more vacuum
area. This would also allow there to be more plastic to stretch at the front
where I really needed it where the big drop is.
002-4.jpg

Time to light it up....Ah yea this is way to big to fit in the oven,
so I am gonna cook it on top.:thumbsup
003-4.jpg

Cooking 3.5mm Polystyrene Yummy!
004-4.jpg

Drooping.....but how much droop? Well I let it droop until I thought I
had enough to deal with that big drop off at the front. But I really stopped
when I first saw the slightest bit of smoke come off then I snatched it off!:lol
You see the aluminum foil on the stove...if you do this at home and you don't remove the knobs and deflect the heat that's trapped under there, you
will melt everything! If your married you will probably end up getting your ass
beat by your wife!
005-1.jpg

It formed very good I formed even the big drop all the
way down to the platen, .....like i said even after spending
the time lowering the cross sections they still formed into
the part.No worries that's why sand paper was invented!

007-3.jpg

Sanding them out....
008-2.jpg

009-2.jpg

Done....flash from riser needs to be cut away,
and the extra 3mm of plastic from the bottom
profile the pattern was built up on needs to be
cut away. It's a shell I would say most off this shell
is still close to 3mm or over 2.5 easy if you rapp your
knuckles on it long enough they would bleed, I mean
you can't flex it at all from the keel line out until you get
down the very sides even then it's tough!!:thumbsup
As you can see I sanded everything out just about perfect,
it's so thick it's no problem....I used 100 grit to start with
and went down.

Re: Slave-1

Vac-forming perfection Michael, love it. I never would have thought you'd get enough heat generating high enough to soften the styrene from the ceran cooktop, especially 3mm styrene, but look at that, incredible mate.
Youv'e given me food for thought on a few Falcon bits here, so thanks for the awesome update.
That formed piece does look very strong mate, it'll do the job just fine.

Stu I put every burner on the highest setting........I wouldn't want
to know how much heat is there!:lol I think i didn't keep track but
I would say it was well on it's way at the 10min mark.:thumbsup

Re: Slave-1

Just a thought, but I guess you could wrap a temporary screen of foil around your wooden frame on the cooktop to keep even more heat localised, maybe reducing the styrene droop time. Obviously leaving a 'window' in the front to see what the styrene is doing. Not a biggie, but just an observation.

You doing the rest of the S1 body panels the same method Michael?.
Love the work here bro, she's gonna be a stunner:D

Re: Slave-1

Now isn't that a sight for saw eyes, Just got back from Moscow to see this come to life, Oh boy mate......I'm begging to think you may have done this before?

It would've been great to be at your place to see the first one born but here at home is good enough...ace stuff

Re: Slave-1

Thanks guys much appreciated......pulgging along on this
pun intended!:D

I got a big piece of glass and taped down the
sandpaper to it to flat sand out the rear skirt. It
sits really nice now all the way around.

This is the port side half section of the tail with
the cross sections mounted to the keel. I will have
to make another for the opposite side. I already
have the other keel cut out, and will just use the
same templates for the cross sections again.

This is the new buck for the front skirt I made another one
I was going to have issues with the first one, because I
made a stupid mistake.:facepalm

Re: Slave-1

Man didnt see the vacforming part until now. That is one heck of a job! Always wanted to do this ever since I read your A-wing thread but dont wanna end my marriage. Maybe I can try it when the wife is not hone but are there any noticeable fumes?
