Fine Molds Slave 1 finished the build!

Re: Fine Molds Slave 1 build. Taking it slow to get it right this time.

Thanks a lot Jake!

it's about time I finish this project and start a new one.
Still need to get me some oil paints for the overall wheatering.

Welcome to my office again!

Guess that explains the avatar ;-)

Glued and primed the stand today. That thing looked so boring when I put the ship on it. so I took my drill, made some holes in it, scratched it up good and primed it again.
then I've put rusty colors on it, working from dark to light.

Wanted to use this stand as a practise for hairspray and salt chipping technique. first sealed the rustlayer with a matte satin varnish. Then applied two coates of hairspray.
Masked some parts of with Maskol, and some others with the salt.
Painted the thing with pale green to give it a match with the ship.
IMG_3824.JPG
The result?
little disappointed about the salt. Need to use more next time.

The hairspray worked perfect. Paint comes of easy and you can really control where you want it to be gone. some hard to reach parts were difficult. Think I missed them with the hairspray, so the paint is hard to remove. Used a lot of tissues to get the excess water away. Otherwise the pigments in it would dull the rust color.
Took a long time to get how I wanted it.
Sealed the paint with another layer of varnish and applied a wash to weather it.

Still need the give the bottom plate a sandy look to finish it off.
that's it for now.

Thanks for watching

1st light test today! Did some soldering @Mauk, Jos couldn't make the printplate, but I could solder all the wires to the LEDs.

Not intentional, but this thing sitting on Jos' workbench made a great "third hand" when I needed one!

A quick test showed that the engines are gonna look awesome!

I painted all the ribs on the clear plastic with silverpaint. It makes great shades on the exhausts. Very difficult to do, since you're not allowed to make mistakes. Everytime I did I quickly went over the aera with a wet brush and paper tissue and redid it.

Yesterday was a day of creativity. scrap building instead of reference building.
Everybody that has been following/reading this thread knows I like a good story in my head while I work. In my head Boba Fett is a lot like us: Scrapbuilding and modifying to get the result he wants... So I started to make a diorama from his toolshed with a pile of junk and spare parts.

I still had some stands from the tie fighter kits and they came in handy for the buildings. Used a styreen H-bar for the support bars.

At some point something blew up in the ship and he had to replace the panels. The old panels ended up being the roofs of his sheds.
In one of the sheds Boba stored his old podracer from when he was a young kid. The colors of that old thing stuck to him for the rest of his life ;-)

IMG_3833.JPGIMG_3835.JPGIMG_3836.JPG

Only thing I regret at the moment is the fact that I chopped up the standing Boba figure. He would look so cool working in his toolshed once it's finished. So if anybody out there has this kit and doesn't use the standing Boba, you could make me real happy!

Re: Fine Molds Slave 1 build. Finally started on the LEDs

Found some time to work on the diorama yesterday. Order came in with flooring material, workbenches, barrels and crates. Needs a little bit of wheatering here and there and Boba's junkyard's done.

Great job!!!

Not to crazy with the finemold stands way too bulky overpowers the models and too distracting IMHO, I try to make the stands as invisible as possible, well that's what I prefer when I build my kits.

Thanks! Normally hang my models on my kids bedroom ceiling. To hard with this kit, so I need to use the stand. Was fun to crazy on it as a practise piece. Pleased with how it turned out.

Re: Fine Molds Slave 1 build. Finally started on the LEDs

My oil paints came in yesterday and today the sun is shining! So I went outside to do some wheatering and give it it's final look.

thank you so kindly! That base was a lot of fun to do.

I was reluctant to start the wheatering, being afraid to overdo it. Very happy with the abteilung paints. Works a lot better than some cheap paint I had a little practice with.
The wheatering is a bit more than the studio model, but that one lacks some dirt on the hull in my opinion.

Jos burned the 4069 ic for the flashing leds last week. Hope it gets done some where soon next week. It's the only thing left to do on this build.

Re: Fine Molds Slave 1 build. Finally started on the LEDs

I'm getting caught up on your build here. Everything is looking great!

Re: Fine Molds Slave 1 build. Finally started on the LEDs

Thank you and I'm flattered. :$ Your paint job looks 100 times better than mine. Keep up the good work.

As I said before on this thread, this forum is such an inspiration with all the good ideas. Would like to do something like you did with the loading door somewhere in the future.

took me three times from scratch to get the paintjob right. The layers are so hard to reproduce for the slave. Hope it helps others on their future builds!

Re: Fine Molds Slave 1 build. Finally started on the LEDs

Had so much fun with this build... temptation was to big!
Guess this is Slave II

IMG_3963.JPGIMG_3964.JPGIMG_3965.JPG

Must be a Boba Fenn out there I can please with one of those..

Got a text from Jos today the flashing leds are working. So one of these babies is gonna have some lights tomorrow!

Re: Fine Molds Slave 1 build. Finally started on the LEDs

I'm seeing double.

Looking great and I love those lights!

thx Randy! Can't wait till thursday to see all the lights working.

After spending so much time on the paintscheme of the Slave, I noticed something odd today in the actual movie footage:
The paintjob just seemed off. At first I thought I was looking at an image of somebody's model build, then I realized:

The image of the slave is flipped when boarding ! When it flies off, it's the okay. No clue why they made that mistake during filming. Maybe they wanted to show the hangar door on the blue screen, but decided to do it differently in the edit with the open space of the clouds.

I flipped it back. So this is how they shot it originally. Makes no sense now, since the ship flips between two scenes.. Hence my presumption the background was planned differently.

Thank you Joberg. I saw you're doing an awesome build yourself!
