Tron Legacy Costume

Hehe sometimes I do wonder if the people on this board are so much more than just enthusiastic fan boy/girls.

In my experience (I worked as a fashion designer and technical designer for about 10 years, went to school 8 years for it), without a fit expert to customize every pattern for the wearer, it is hard to achieve a flawless catsuit that fits the whole body. The question of a patternmaker can craft up a pattern is totally possible, but the fitting will be so intensive and, you wouldn't even recognize the original pattern afterwards. In that same logic, my suggestion for you is to buy 2X the stretch material you will need to complete the outfit, and use half of it to make the pattern. You are right that there is a specialized field for stretchy knits + swimwear/underwear collections.

The reason why Gem had the batwing effect was because the armhole of her suit is too low. I would have raised the armhole to fix that.

I am in agreement that cat suits are only for those who are body confident. With that confident, it comes with such grace that I applause them. :thumbsup

I'm using 8 AA batteries in series for each inverter. I can fit 2 sets of 8 batteries in the box that is mounted on the lower back. If you need high current draw, you can go with Lithium Ion batteries and do the same set up.

If you use 2 A4 sheets of EL Panel, it should last about 2 hours...so carry lots of batteries!

For my Costume, I used 2X 8AA battery packs (2 inverters total). And it lasted the 8 hours + 4 more.

The total of my EL tape equals to 160ft of 2.3mm light wire.

I have another smaller 2AAA battery powered plug and play inverter for my sword, and another slightly bigger (4 AAA powered)plug and play for my circles. ;)

Just signed up, my first post. Just wanted to thank everyone involved in this thread for amazing research and creativity. I'm going to be trying to throw something together for Halloween this year, and just to make sure I get completely in over my head (pun possibly intended) I've decided to try and make a Rinzler suit. Yangxiaobo has been an incredible assistance in this regard, so thanks to him for his ingenuity.

I think I have an idea how I want to go about most of the stuff (I'm a complete noob so I'm avoiding electrical lighting and just using the 3M Scotchlite red tape, Rinzler isn't well-lit anyway). The one thing I wanted to try and do is include some of Rinzler's armor accents. I figured I'd use something like this for my base:

Amazon.com: EVS Cold Weather TUG Long-Sleeved Shirt - Small/Medium/Black: Automotive
+
Amazon.com: Troy Lee Designs BP 7850-HW Shirt Youth Undergarment Dirt Bike Motorcycle Body Armor - Color: Black, Size: Medium: Automotive
+
Amazon.com: Troy Lee Designs BP7705 Pants Adult Undergarment MotoX Motorcycle Body Armor - Color: Black, Size: Medium: Automotive

Possibly leave out the motocross chest-piece and just use the atheltic gear, since the armor is kind of expensive (I'd pay that much in a heartbeat if it had the look I wanted in the first place...)

My question, then, is what kind of material would you guys recommend that I use over top of this gear to add the various armor accents? I've read of EVA foam and Neoprene being used by people on here, but I'm not sure which materials work for particular applications.

I joke about getting in over my head because this is my first attempt at costuming at all! Any help is greatly appreciated (especially if it's reality check related).

P.S. Shout to the UDReplicas folks on the amazing Tron replica gear... hurry and make the Rinzler outfit and I'll just get it instead!!

I get the impression that a lot of the backgrounds in the movie were dressed exactly that sort of stuff, so it seems pretty valid to me.

But again as we were saying about the girls in the close-fitting stuff, if it were me, I'd build some gym time into the process unless I was very confident I could pull it off. You may identify some degree of self doubt in my fixation with this issue and you'd be right, I personally have a face like an industrial accident which means you will never see me in costume, but I'm tired of looking at pictures of people who weigh 300lbs dressed as evangelion pilots. Seriously, people do, eh, how can I be delicate... overlook this issue?

Especially, y'know. Tron. Talk about world of world of spandex, but I guess that goes for a lot of the sci fi/fantasy stuff has the same issue.

Vasarian, your notes on the Siren costume are interesting. It's clearly made out of a huge number of separate parts stitched together (which precludes its being raw latex, I suspect). I wonder how much of that part count is down to making it fit, and how much is down to the two-tone colour blocking they did. Even that seems to have been rather carefully designed to enhance, er, figure... things...

I must start a thread on Steambot Studios' Exoddysey book which has some interesting stuff in it from this point of view.

Activewear and stretch knits do require a specialist to achieve performance. I spent the last 6 months designing for an activewear startup and it wasn't a nightmare, but I learned a lot about how stretch fabrics behave. The same pattern on different people will look completely different. Sewing will crack if you omit the slightest setting or detail. Testing the pattern in the actual, final spandex is mandatory if you want a precise fit.

I remember reading an interview with Beau Garrett where she mentioned an inner corset layer. While I have no idea if it was a full fledged, full support corset (doubtful) or more like a girdle (most likely), some kind of inner shapewear is absolutely essential for achieving a smooth silhouette in any costume, no matter how perfect your body is.

YES.

We are now veering wildly outside my experience, as I am male and therefore my concept of foundation garments begins and ends with finding a pair of boxers lurking in the bottom if the drawer and wondering if they're too horribly diseased.

However I do recall Spanx crowing that they'd fit Jessica Alba for Fantastic Four. Seemed a bit chauvinistic as the guys all got muscle suits and immediately looked like they were made out of cast iron even if they were on the pizza-and-ice-cream diet, whereas the hapless Ms Alba was on tap water and ACME brand imitation gruel for the duration and had to wear the sort of reinforced, bear-resistant support layers that make bathroom breaks such a chore.

Still, she's Jessica Alba, I'm sure she can contain her disappointment.

Hi there.

Just wanted to say that I went with the exact same setup, and for the same reasons, It looks cool your screen. Only when it arrived the chest piece looked nothing (texture wise) to the photo on the website and didn't have the semi gloss finish (see pic). Yes you can use foam sheets and I've soon some awesome results from other people on this forum. For me, I went with PlastiDip. The spray version didn't work as the spacing between the weave is a lot bigger in real life which you can't see in the site pic. I experimented with the paint-on/dip version and found that if I taped off the the shape I needed and built up several layers on a smooth serfice I could could affectively make rubberised sheets/patterns. I then attached the layers on my costume to look like the stuff used for the screen suits. Use the spray as a final coating (about to three layers) to give it a matt Finnish (just want to point out that I didn't go with this technique for the costume in the pic as I developed it later on).

The pants are very thin and will need layering up. I wouldn't attach anything with any wait to them without extra support/strengthening as it makes the material sag. The padded thigh sections are fine though and I ended up using those to attach the EL wire to.

Actually EL wire/tape is pretty easy to use and I would recommend it to any Tron fan. My avatar pic was my first costume build and had never heard of EL wire until I found this thread (God bless the RPF). It was both fun and rewarding to see my costume light up properly for the first time. The people who sell it are most accommodating, and after explaining what I intended to do with it, thay put extra connectors on my wire and tape so I didn't have to worry about soldering everything myself (just plug and play). After messing around with for a while I learns how to connect it myself. then want on to mod my own disc as well.
This is the place for awsome tips and info. Without it I would never have got into making my own costumes.

i think i will modify my leather jacket with el-band like flynn wear it by the creation fron clu2.

But i will sewing it on the jacket and not by glue.

but we want to make a suit like gem out of latex with el band an other ideas.

but you all make good outfits.

sorry for my bad english but my home language ist german

Thanks for the warning on the moto armor Canobi, I will probably not buy it in that case. Were you also referring to the long-sleeve undergarment? Appreciate the tips on the legs too. Always good to hear some first hand experience on products that I can only look at online.

I'm probably going to stick with reflective materials only because I think building the costume's shape is going to take all my time until Halloween. I'm not very experienced with any of this stuff. Since I'm doing a Rinzler suit there's only a couple places where the lights need to be any kind of bright anyway. I'll probably add EL later on though.

Awesome tip on the PlastiDip, I will be looking into using that. It sounds a lot easier to build up the layers than to try and cut them from foam sheets (I'm not a 3D artist!)

The long sleeve shirt is ok. I ended up buying the small size as I thought it might hug my body better, but for me the arms were too short so I used Velcro to attach the gloves to the arms to hold it together.

I know stuff gets lost pretty quickly on this thread since it's so long - if anyone wanted to do the same Disc mod as I did (Custom Tron Disc Mod) - I'd be more than glad to help anyone out. I have one up for auction as well since I made an extra while I was writing the instructions.

My mod could also be done with the kits that Soulinertia is selling to get a color other than blue. I'm not sure if he's selling kits with only the rings and no electronics.

Wow! I've been off a few weeks and it's cool to see how many projects are coming out.

I haven't been fast with mine, but with Halloween coming up, I want to get something together...

So, since I'm nearly done my C.L.U. helmet, (need to clean up the edges of the plastic, where I'll then glue together, dip in clear coats and tint coats, install lights... ) But I will definitely not be done the costume in time, considering I haven't started it yet.

So I'm thinking of doing an updated flashback Flynn bike jacket... Instead of a straight-line light strip, it would reflect the styled strip on the right side of C.L.U.'s costume.

clumotorcyclejacketsmall.jpg

It's only the light strip and collar detailed above, I intend to make some of it out of fabric instead of leather... (I'm getting the leather from an old black leather bike jacket.)

The shoes I will be using are some cool looking Skechers, which I will lay a light strip down one of the stripes on the side on each shoe, probably holding the power-pack's in my pockets of the modern, dark, boot-cut jeans I will be using.

I think it will be a cool costume. I am of course missing a light-bike though... And I'll need to change my disc as well. :-/ I have more than a month though, and a lot of free time. Exactly what I need to get it done. :)

I actually like the design, but it still reminds me a revamp of star trek TNG engineers.

have finally had some free time to have a go at a Tron helmet (my very first pep build), am already over sanding auto filler (bondo). Hoping to have finished before Halloween to wear, here is progress so far:

Hoping to finish sanding & detailing by weekend then cut visor out and heat shape some plastic to fit

Well it will be different... I just sketched it yesterday without even looking at the actual C.L.U. suit... The line is much more curved and closer to the center on the suit...

And I may consider doing the even more styled left stripe, instead of the simpler right one mocked up above... And, there will also be fabric, like, on the underarm, and the sides, and some on the shoulders in the back (so the leather doesn't bunch up when my arms are outstretched,) etc... The collar is even going to look like the one in the suit, where it flares down a bit into the front, I just never connected the collar to the two lines below the neck... It will look a lot cooler.

And it will be all black, with the strip lighting up. Also, it will be a bit taller, as my mockup is just a bad mockup.

I've never seen Star Trek, so I don't know how similar it is or what you are talking about... I just want to make a newer, C.L.U.-ified version of the flashback flynn jacket, to wear with the C.L.U. helmet, newer styled jeans, and newer style shoes with a different light strip on them... Because there is a few decades between now and then.

I think it would be pretty cool if you also put some lights along the inner collar. Cool design!

Hey guys,

When cutting el tape, what do you need to seal the end you cut?
I was thinking just clear tape, but wondering what you guys have
done, or know about. I have some glowhut el tape, and I just
want to make sure it's safe to cut :confused. Thanks!

I think it would be pretty cool if you also put some lights along the inner collar. Cool design!

Well, I will also be wearing the helmet, which will hide that... And, the few gaps light will escape out of won't look good.

Would be cool if I wasn't going to wear the helmet though. But I'm also making it so that I can take the lighting out and still have a cool jacket I cam wear anytime. (I've never been able to find a cool leather jacket anywhere...) I mean, I am fitting it to myself. :D (I generally never have fitted clothing. This is special. :D)

Clear is enough. Cheap and gets the job done. The ends need to be insulated and protected from water so I think you're good as long as the ends are sealed with non conductive tape. Using clear lets the glow come through. Some instructions for using their tape, have you go nuts with hot glue and stuff for the end with the conductive leads, but electrical black tape is enough.

Just don't dive into a pool, or walk around in the rain.

Thanks man =]
Clear tape FTW!
