32 inch ESB Millennium Falcon

Hey all you out there working on the 32" Falcon projects!Great work!I'm still in the planning/drawing stages.Anyone have any additional sugestions/information to draw acurate prints of the Falcon for angles, curves(Falcon plating templates)...to make patterns&such forward landing bay compartments ect, ect?Ive got the good top&bottome views to go off of in the Chronicals book....not much to go on with side views to determine the sidewall height, what thickness plastic was used to start with, then used for plating ect?
As far as kit bashing is concerned, all I know is whats been printed&talked about in the forum....what are the problem/questionable areas of the 32"ILM falcon? If I knew what to be looking for,I may be able to identify some parts,I'd like to help...but all I know of are the parts found in here.....kit(s) used ect, ect,I'd like to contribute my 10 cents worth.I've found that once i have the actual kit in from of me instead of starring at a thumbnail picture on e-bay...I can identify parts off of sprues that were used.Shortly I'll have some of the tougher....more expennsive kit(s) that were used, such as the Bandai tank&the 1/8 Entex parts from the JPS&935 Porsche trans.I'll be making castings of some of these things if anyone needs them.Anyway,if someone can give me a boost,I'd much appreciate it.

Thankyou,
John Polacchi

Start with as many photos as you can get your hands on.

Then.....figure out the basic dimensions that look right to you.

Build your basic shape...decide on how you want to run your electrical.

Then buy every tank kit mentioned here or anywhere else.

After you have your basic shape built and plated, start sorting through the models identifying parts and remove what you recognize in the photos.

Honestly...thats how you do it.

Thanks for the offer on the kits....but..already got em. if someone else is building one..they might need them.

Thanks Brundle!I appreciate the feedback.....hey,out of curiosity...how come when I check out the pc modeler site,I cant find any Star wars references?Ive seen it mentioned in here on more than 1 occassion.I think Tim said he got some pictures from a fella that works(or worked) on/for that site and got photo references for his SlaveI project,I seem to remember him talking about that in here a while back.I thought there may be other photo references there as well...Y-wing,Falcon,SlaveI ect, ect.Last time I tried&looked, there was just a bunch of Star Treck reference photos,am I looking in the wrong spot?I was wondering if you had any luck with that web page,or knew of any other web site that can add to the info?.Anyway, thankyou again and as they say..."back to the drawing board."Keep up the good work......yur Falcon is looking TIGHT!-John

Frank, I'm simply amazed at your work. It's really inspiring to see how your bird has been coming along. I hope to one day try my hand at one and I would be happy if it came out half as good as yours.

THank you!!!
I admire your work !! so thats an awesome Comment!!

Im just hoping to get mine as good as MOES!!

He is just out of control!!

Nice work both of you Frank&Moe...I can only hope mine will looks as good...Im having trouble with reference info, still working on plans....once i get over that hurdle...I think I'll do alright(knock on wood).....keep the good work comming-John

Thanks JP

Am I the only one doing this one - beside Frank?
Its been a while since we actually saw so real stuff in here!

Well I can understand, it is a challenge, still is - but when its done ... man...

Hey Moe,welcome back...its nice to see a familiar face. How's yur Falcon comming along?I was wondering if you might have anything to share/add in the ways of Falcon reference material?I just have the Chronicals really,it has some nice (top&bottom) pictures in there, but no clear side, rear pictures....I was wondering what else you were using to draw up some good plans&get the angles&curves right? Also a good view of the access ports on the ship(for part i.ding)?I can freehand draw pretty well, but Im not much of a draftsman...but do ok.Anyways, post more updated pics of yur Falcon if you have any,I love seeing the progress......keep up the great work-John

The Falcon is going to be fine.
Anything to share?... not really, most of my ref. pictures are not mine, so natually I can't do that.
As for the building plan, study and study the Cronicle's as I did - its all in there - but if you want to get a real good plan you should take a trip to see the real 32" Falcon as I did. I think its still on display in Finland. Take a lot of pictures and study them.
Making the plan is not a rush job - I spend 2-3 weeks every night to get my plan as good as it is. A computer and the programme Adobe Illustrator did help me a lot.
When I started I didn't see the Falcon as the Falcon but only a geometric shape, found the different "fix" points where the lines in the ship cross each other and so. When I got this right I up-scaled to the actual size.
You can also buy some of the kit and measure the parts thats used - this should make you able to decide the size of the Ship.

Good luck

Hety, thanks Moe....Ive been studying the pics in chronicals recently........so,hopefully soon I can get some drawings done&compare them.I wish there were some better places on the net to get good references.Starship modeler is ok.....but they only have a few pictures of the access panels.Do you,or anyone else know where there may be an ILM /Lucas exibit going on in the US?Preferribly somewhere in California.I missed the exibit in London 2 years ago when I was on holiday.Anyway, back to the drawing board yet again-lol!Take it easy-John

"It was also announced that The Art of Star Wars, the most popular and well-attended exhibition in the Barbican Art Gallery's history, will tour art and cultural centers across Europe after it closes at Bradford on April 21. The tour is planned to travel to Finland, France, Scotland, Germany, and Spain.

While all dates are subject to final confirmation, in Finland, The Art of Star Wars is currently scheduled to run from August 14, 2001 to January 13, 2002 at the Helsinki City Art Museum. In France, La Villette in Paris is tentatively set to host the exhibit from the spring to the summer of 2002. The Art of Star Wars is then scheduled to travel to Scotland for a stay at Edinburgh's City Art Centre from summer to winter of 2002. Venues in Germany and Spain for 2003 are to be announced. "

The 32" will be on this exhibition...

Hi Moe&Frank.....have'nt seen anyone visit this thread recently, but I thought I'd ask a question...dont know if it'll do me any good, but here it goes.Which photo references did you use to determine the depth of the access ports on the Falcon, such as the 4 that are on the forward mandibles(above&below)the 3 that are on top of the ship(also the radar dish)and the forward 2 that are on the bottom either side of the lower landing gear bays?Did you use specific pictures in any of the references,or did you determine the depth by other means? If yu can give me a hand,I'd much appreciate any help,thanks-John

I have used simple logic - mine are half the height of the sidewalls.
As for the others manholes, you'll have to find some of the parts. Then by taking measures from the parts you'll be able to decide the deeps of the manhole.

Thanks Moe&Frank...that helps lots...it was making me crazy.Anyways, now I hope I can help the two of you out,and i think I have found something that might, unless some of you are aware of it already. No,I did'nt identify a new part....it seems as though most kit parts have been identified for the 32" Falcon already.Anyway,I found a webpage that has a series of amazing pictures of the 5ft. Falcon...but would be enormously helpful no matter what scale you are making. There are 19 pictures in all...many of them are of the forward mandible area&inbetween...all close ups...so you get all that juicy detail..so those of you who are getting down to the nitty gritty of kitbashing&super detailing yur Falcons...these are some terriffic pictures. There are a couple of the rear...and some close ups of the radar dish..and some of the cockpit....but if you have'nt seen these pictures already, you will love them when you do.I'll be printing all of them shortly.Anyways..here is the web page address www.steinschneider.com/props/star_wars/millenium_falcon
I dont think you have to put in the entire address, but I thought I'd list the entire thing anyway...I think up to "star wars" will do.I hope this gives you guys a hand in detailing yur models..let me know if this helped at all-John

... here is an example of the detail and effort taken to identify parts.

DO YOU know what this part is??
Wanna GUESS how long it took Frank and I to find it?
Lets see how long it takes you.
