Accurate Superman Movie Costume COMPLETE! Pics up!!

Here are some more pics I found through Google.com :
1113.jpg

It was from an auction:

Christopher Reeve "Superman, The Movie" / "Superman II" movie-worn costume.

Reserve $12,500

This one is okay but the belt buckle & logo are wrong if they are trying to make the film costume.

Here is another one:
672ft.jpg

This is the teal/green bluescreen costume. No boots in the pic, but a nice laid out image. I took the liberty of creating the graphics below from that picture above:

Excellent pics Propsculptor - well found!
Aeon - notice the artificial heels in the auction costume? I believe those are the ones used in the fight between Superman and Zod in the Metropolis battle in Superman II. Facing an article deadline but will try and answer all PM's and post again at the weekend. Have more pics of a real flying cape to add...

Martin.

There's something disturbing about that pic, Aeon - I think the cape is too long and the crotch of the shorts is too wide - The shield and the tunic look correct though...

Actually, I'm resizing the photos now and the cape is definitely the right length. Everything is right on the money except how the red trunks look

This is one of the flying capes from an AFI diplay in Disney - I was lucky to see it. It's a deep blood-red wool gaberdine and incredibly wide. I don't know the exact proportions but Aeon's sound pretty much on the money...

Notice the strap ties that go round the arms. I'm a little concerned about those showing through the lycra when my suit is complete. Also I don't know what the hell kind of swimming cap could double up as a codpiece. I'm thinking of vacu-forming the crotch of a mannequin to create a seamless box...

I wouldn't be too concerned with the straps showing thru. The costume I have on hand right now is a light 4 way stretch spandex, and when worn, the straps, not to mention some of the cape itself was underneath the top, did not show through at all. The straps are 1" wide and the length (from what I can tell) is 30" in the picture I last posted and 36" on the replica I currently have.

As I stated in one of my earlier posts: "Yvonne Blake ordered a Large Swimmer's Cup to be worn under the pants,
to hide some obvious protuberances".

I did a search online and found many results, even Ebay has one for sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2870127940&category=15671 I am sure that you could find one in a local store.

Propscultor - An apology - I had no idea those things existed, I'm an idiot who thought Blake had modified one you wear on your head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So - any totally smooth ones about then???

Bananas also reported that...

OMG, who'da thought 70's pre-teen magazines would be a source of prop info? Awesome!

Come to think of it, somewhere I have a Dynamite cover with a pic of R2-D2 (original riveted version) "hugging" a little girl with his utility arms. It's boxed away somewhere but I'll post it if it ever turns up.

I estimated some measurements from these pics:
672ft.jpg

Top Collar: 41" Length: 66" Bottom Width: 60"

Cape1_1.jpg

Top Collar: 41" Length: 72" Bottom Width: 75"

This is based on the assumption that the "S" Logos are 12" across since the logo for the costume I am making is 12".

Since the Red Garberdine fabric I bought is only 59" wide, I guess I'll have to make due with what I have.

I hope this is helpful to anyone making their own Costume.

Length is 49" if you take MisterFusion's measurements into a count. My cape is 51 inches long and 72" wide. The collar is a bit over 2ft wide. I believe mine was based on the cape seen in the pic above (green costume) rather than the hero walking piece.

I have a couple of questions,

What is the exact shape of the cape? I don't think its just a rectangle (help me out, I'm a beginner)

Where does a guy get one of those belt buckles? That, to me, seems to be the hardest thing to find.

any help is appreciated

Hey TroyF! Welcome to the board from a fellow newbie!

As for the cape, the question lies within what kind of cape you want really. The walking cape need to look nice on camera with a nice balanced look, so it's more like a semi circle cut as opposed to the flying capes and other rigged ones, which could be a circular cut or just a simple squarish rectanglular cut. As soon as I get my cape back, I would be more than happy to share the measurements.

The buckle would be an eazy one here on this board. Just ask around and I'm very sure you will find a perfect one for a very good price.

Since I am new to sewing I am still having trouble figuring out how it was done!!

Stitching the 'S' was the biggest nightmare for my seamstress as she had to use a stitch that allows the interlocking pieces to stretch along with the rest of the tunic. The Symbol itself is inserted in the same way. My suit still lacks refinement as it was difficult to machine around corners for the marked-out shapes to meet. These are going to be plucked and hand sewn to the correct shape. It's not something i'd recommend anybody to do on their first attempt at this costume! I's go pay someone with experience to have a crack at it. mark out the symbol, cut out the pieces and hand one over as a trial...
in the meantime, this shot shows the cape backing (under the right arm.) I'm thinking of two layers of wool just to pad the shoulders and one layer for the drape;

Also found this from the Movieland wax museum. An original suit nicely preserved...
