Accurate Superman Movie Costume COMPLETE! Pics up!!

The cape is one giant sheet. Depending on which cape you're talking about, the shape of the cape varies and so do the measurements. The most favorable cape is probably the walking/hero cape and that's likea semi circle cut, spands about 9ft wide and is a few inches over 4ft long. Despite common knowledge about the pleats... The hero cape has 4 pleats on each side.

Gel, the suit looks great so far! You keep right on lavishing those details!

You say you referenced Yvonne Blake's original design. Where did you come by that reference material?

On a sadder note...it KILLS me to see the condition of some of those costumes!

Here's a pic of my friend's original Supes outfit. When it's not on display, it's in storage.

And here's my original cape. It's 49" from collar to bottom. There's cotton batting and shoulder pads sewn into back and shoulder areas of the cape to fill it out.

You'd think the people who display costumes and props as a way to entice customers to patronize their businesses (Planet Hollywood, Theme Parks, etc.) would lavish a little more care on the items they're displaying...lazy, short-sighted, money-grubbing ba$tard$. Anyone know the actual size of the chest and cape logos?

I think that they are 12" across, but I have not had the chance
to see a Real Reeve Costume in person (I wish I had)!

The Boots in the pic look really plastic!!

Boots are form fitting leather. To date, no one seems to have made an accurate pair of boots.

Oh man... What I would give to get a good replica or those originals!!

The S emblems are about the same size. The one on the chest is spandex, so it stretches with the body, but mostly vertically. The S on cape is basically 11" wide and 7.5" long. I never saw a complete original costume in person, but I have seen a screen used cape before. If I had to guess, I'd say the chest and cape emblem are the same size.

Propsculptor- PMed ya.

Here is a pic I found on the Internet doing a search:

The person who has this on their website said it was a George Reeves costume, obviously they were mistaken!

And, there were different boots to be shot at different angles.

The main boots had velcro running along the back seam, but they also had boots with front and side closures as well. The boots were shot only showing one or two sides at a time so you couldn't see how they closed.

Steve

Steve- The boots never had zippers correct? I'm still trying to answer that one... Interesting factoid you got there though.

This thread keeps getting more useful with every post.

Director Richard Donner originally wanted the Superman costumes to have no visible seams. An attempt to do this was abandoned because the logistics of changing the costume shot by shot (all seams on left/all seams on right) would not have worked. I'll post a pic of the boots tonite, as far as I could tell, they are literally thin vynyl socks (Reeve was a size 11) that have no support in the base and a zipper concealed by a velcro flap in the back. Thse would also be modified scene to scene (look at pictures of Supes holding up the railway track).
There are no truly accurate boots out there, but mine will eventually be ordered from Ghostbuster Joseph. His are close enough style-wise and have the handy addition of a concealed heel (for I could do with the height!!)

When I say accurate, I meant that the kind of leather used, the cut of the boots and like you said; the overal thin pair of socks look. That's what I'm looking to get, but no one makes.

Here are a couple more pics from the FL display.
Aeon, I think it must be easier to replicate these things than to make a 'real' boot. If you cut vinyl to a boot pattern you could make the modifications (the notch, etc)and stitch it together
it couldn't look any worse than these!

I agree, though. it's a shame these aren't widely available.

Also found the closeup pic of the 'S' symbol. It's not the best but - look at the stitching!
Shield1_1.jpg

The smaller yellow pieces are stitched in conventionally (hence the visibility) but the larger pieces are pinched back and sewn from behind so the shield expands with the rest of the suit - this is presumably why a patch would'nt work...

EEK! That is one bad S. You should post more pictures. These are extremely helpful!!

Here is my opening bid... I'll commission anyone who can replicate these boots in a similar fashion for me. If any of you great costumers see this and want to take this on, PM me please!!

I would try to do this myself, but I have no clue how to sew nor do I have access to any machines.

GEL- Have you seen any of these in person? I'm curious about the material of the spandex... I have been behind the whole heavy weight spandex thing for a while, but judging that in some scenes, a nipple (
icon_lol.gif
) is visible through the costume makes me believe that some costumes may have been a lighter 4 way stretch. I've seen some heavy spandex before and those things are so tight, half your gut would dissappear when wearing it.

Here's a shot of the bottom of the boots in the film...
sboots.jpg

You can see that he was wearing some kind of footwear underneath the leather socks/spats. The boots didn't seem to ever have any kind of sole on them and he was mostly running around in a studio, so there is no need for them...

Here is a source for Lycra I found online for those having trouble finding a stretch/Lycra source in their area:

http://www.laceland.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/store3/frames.htm?L+mystore3+uufd2835+1068605606

They have Red, Blue, and Yellow colors.

The closest I found online to Superman's suit color is
F455TU Turquoise for $6.25 a yard for the Raschel knit, or $7.25 for the Tricot knit.

Unfortunatly the Minimum Quantity is 10 yards for the fabrics.

If anyone else knows a better source, let us all know.

If you watch Superman 2, in the scene when Supes is fighting Zod he gets thrown into the back of a truck and you can see the boots very clearly there too.

I believe Azure blue (on the link posted above) is much closer. The color isn't all that light. Depending on lighting, it could vary from a royal blue to a teal color. It could be seen on my suite and that was taken with a flash.

GEL- Get my PMs?

Andy

For my Superman costume I am using a Royal Blue, but I am not making the Movie Version, mine is more like the Comic version.

I am using the same techniques as they did on the movie suit so it may take me a while since I am new to sewing!
