My $7.00 “Star Trek: TOS” Utility Belt

Getting the final touches on my costume for a party on the 27th.

I decided to go the “Captain Kirk” route and picked up the Season One velour shirt and season 1 / season 2 pants from Anovos.

The pants are being picked up from the tailor, today, and the boots were on a month long trip from China to to the US and were released from customs in LA a day or so ago...it’s anyone’s guess as to whether they will get here on time. :wacko

I also pre-ordered the Season 1 Utility Belt from Anovos but that will obviously not be here in time. With very little time left, and business travel tightening the timetable, I decided to whip out a quick, but accurate looking, mid-season 1 utility belt.

I went to Hobby Lobby, last night, and picked up $2.25 of their upholstery-grade textured leatherette and 2 packs of sticky back sewing Velcro. I was going to break out my wife’s sewing machine, but then I thought that since this is only meant to be a temporary solution, for one costume party, that maybe just using “Super 77” to stick this thing together would work.

After measuring, cutting, and folding the seams, I sprayed “Super 77” in place of thread and slapped this together in under an hour.

It actually looks really accurate to the originals with only some very minor differences in details.

All in, my cost was roughly $7.00. No bad :) The props are build-ups of John Long kits.

I am SO stealing your idea. I love it!

Definitely!

I wish I had saved the exact product code for the material as the stuff I used was perfect for the job—very durable without being overly thick. It was the only “textured” black leatherette that they had in the upholstery section so it should be easy to find.

Update on the boots...

The previous boots are not going to get here by Saturday. So, I spent the past hour looking for boots that could get to my location by Friday on EBay, Amazon, DSW, etc. I found these vintage Florsheim boots that are pretty close. The heel is not quite a Cuban, the toe is too blunt, and the height is not high enough, but they should pass for the evening and reach Judt past the bottom of the cuffs of the pants with no problems.

Hilarious timing...

I just received a shipping notice from ANOVOS for my Season One TOS Utility belt, with an expected delivery date being the date of the costume party:
