V3: Production Version Build

OK, starting as I usually do on these, from the bottom of the saber hilt and slowly progressing upward, I started weathering my Starkiller V2/V3 Kit with the intention to make a “production version” of the V3 as it may have looked during the production of Jedi, prior to its current modified post-production condition.

The grub screws are still on order, but I decided to do the basic metal weathering from the pommel up to the booster, to include “Hamill damage” to the bottom of the pommel from being bounced against the ground during shooting:

After the grub screws are attached, I’ll move up the saber and continue to weather it followed by paint and more weathering to include the half moon chuck mark between the pommel cubes (thanks Halliwax for sharing your method there). This will be a fun one since the production appearance is fairly vague with only a very basic amount of solid details; there is a lot of room for interpretation. By and large, I’ll be following the slightly darker (compared to the V2) scheme seen in the stunt resin copy of the V3 which was obviously meant to approximate its original production look.

Are you going with chipped copper paint on the neck?

It would seem the copper didn't show up until it's final "repaint"

I think it was some form of brownish dark brass the whole way, replicating the grenade, though the death star duel shows a non-yellow color

Nice blackening job! excited to see this progress. I fully support beating the **** out of this thing :)

I’ll be going with chipped paint around the wind vane, and the paint job overall, but it I’ll be going with the muddy brown color matching the color of the wind vane seen on the current V2 as that represents what was most likely on the V3 prior to the post production refurbishment.

As I understand it, the V3 went through 2 refurbishments. One for ROTJ, and one after the film. If you look on page 46 of Seth's book, you can see the color. It's appears to be a brighter color than the V2. I think that might have something to do with the copper color being applied over the top of the black paint.

I’ll most likely use the colors of the windvane exhibitted here as my overall guide:

Small update...

I knocked down some of the darknesss of the pommel / booster area and worked on darkening up the wind vane and balance pipe to give it a light steel-like coloring. I’m pretty happy with the general color so far.

I’m trying to stick with the overall darker tone of the resin stunt, if for no other reason than to not end up with just another V2 whose only difference from my other V2 is that it’s missing its emitter nipple, warpage in the emitter disc, and clamp card/lever...

I started moving forward with this project, this weekend.

I am using the following—though limited in quality—-production photos as the basis for my build.

The final weathering, pommel and emitter alignment, and supplemental grub screws, are not yet completed, but, here is where I’m st so far...

Freak’n love everything about this! The emitter is amazing alley!

Love the circuit card of choice as well!!

For the emitter face and emitter side, I actually adapted bits of leftover V2 paint templates from Trooper Trent’s first run. I should have taken a picture. The rest of the paint chipping has been done with toothpicks, tape, and steel wool.

man, thats creative. I did a graphite coat on an Indy pistol and secured it the same way - I may do this with my V2!

I did some work on the windvane last night.

There is scant color photography of the confirmed “production V3” but it does appear to have a more “coppery” colored windvane than the “muddy” appearance of the V2 (possibly the result of a touch-up at some point?)

Here is my first pass at my assumption of what it may have looked like:

Part of me thinks the windvane’s weathering may be “too V2-like” and I may strip it and take another pass at it.
