What IS the right way to create a 1989 Bat-Boot?

As many of you know the base shoe was similar to a Nike Air Trainer III, while not exact. I'm interested in seeing individuals take on the great design from the first Tim Burton film.

At this point all we could do is modify a pair of Nike Air Trainer III sneakers to the best of our ability. My main goal would be to cover the perforations that the originals did not have, though it may not be possible to do a clean job.
